Differences in SSIS/BIDS in Visual Studio with installs of SQL Server 2008 express vs. standard RRS feed

  • Question

  • My primary development environment is Visual Studio 2008 (Standard) with SQL Server 2008 express installed on a laptop running under Windows XP Home SP2.  I recently installed SQL Server 2008 (Standard) on another Vista desktop on our network so I could use Business Intelligence Development Studio to help with database migration.

The Visual Studio 2008 on my development laptop has templates for SSIS and Business Intelligence Development Studio, but when I try to use them I get the error message:

Microsoft Visual Studio is unable to load this document.
To design Integration Services packages in Business Intelligence Development Studio, Integration services needs to be installed by one of these editions of SQL Server 2008 Standard, Enterprise, Developer or Evaluation. To install Integration services, run SQL server setup and select integration services.

In order to get full BIDS/SSIS functionality I have to log in remotely and use Visual Studio on the Vista desktop.  Is this normal or am I missing something?

It was my understanding that SQL Server 2008 Business Intelligence Development Studio could not work under Windows XP Home, but I see most of the templates have been installed.  With the installation DVD for SQL Server Standard, is there any way I can get full BIDS/SSIS functionality in the Visual Studio on my laptop?

Also, how can I access the source code generated by the BIDS project?  Is there an exe generated by BIDS?

    Thanks for any help!

    Hi,

Under the Setup folder of SQL Server 2008 installation files, there is a exe file named vsshell.

Try to install it to develop the Integration Services packages.

    Hopefully this helps.

  • This Error can happen when you just have BIDS installed, and is a bug that we have been working to fix. The licensing check expects to see SSIS installed, and you only have BIDS installed. Sorry about that :-)

We hope to ship the fix in Cumulative Update #4 for SQL 2008 coming out real soon.
I am working on a KB 963070 content to describe the remedy which should release whenever the hotfix ships.

Meanwhile, on the client desktop, you can install Intergration Services. Run Setup and add the "Integration Services" feature to the existing installation of BIDS. To do this, rerun the Setup program, and then select Add Features to an Existing Installation.  For more information, visit the following MSDN Web site: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc281940.aspx

  • Install the Integration Services for SQL 2008 and then open your package.  You don't have to have it running, just installed....I know I had the same issue.
