SCCM clients downloading from Distribution point instead of Branch Distribution point RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,

I have been checking some of our computers in our domain that are having problem downloading the advertised packages. Some will start the download then suddenly stop. Upon checking C:\Windows\System32\CCM\Logs\DataTransferService.log, I noticed that the client is downloading the package from the Distribution point which in our case is our SCCM server in our HO and not from the BDP with the same boundary of the client.

As I know, the client should connect to the BDP first instead of the DP since it is nearer to it. The client should only connect to the DP if the BDP is down or unreachable. Am I correct?

Please share some thoughts about this.

    Thanks!

  • Hello Mark,

1-These cleints are contacting on PMP?

    2-Have you protected your DP/BDP?

3-What about boundary, those clients are falling under boundary which you have configured? for BDP or DP?

If cleint is getting package from local DP not brom BDP then I beleive MP or PMP are not working, have you configured any roaming boundary?

  • Sounds like a boundary issue.

  • Clients will always prefer SMB over BITS. Check the boundaries and reconfigure accordingly.

  • Hello Mark,

If you have PMP/MP in your environment then check PMP/MP is working fine or not,

check MPCONTROL.log file and also check the locationservice.log file, what is says, client is getting local MP or PMP,

  • Hello Mark,

Did you set the BDP as protected DP ? and set the IP subnets  for it

    Go through the below link:

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb932133.aspx

To configure a protected distribution point

    1. In the Configuration Manager console, navigate to System CenterConfiguration Manager / Site Database / Site Management / <site code> - <site name> / Site Settings / Site Systems.

    2. Expand the site system server that is configured with the distribution point role that you want to protect.

    3. In the results pane, right-click ConfigMgr site system, and then select Properties.

    4. Click Enable this site system as a protected site system.

    5. Click Select Boundaries.

    6. In the Boundaries dialog box, click New.

    7. In the New Boundaries dialog box, select a boundary from the list, and then click OK.

      noteNote
Boundaries appear in the list only if they have been configured for the site and have not already been assigned as protected boundaries to another site system.

    8. Click OK twice.

  • Hi,

From the MPCONTROL.log, I may say that the MP is working fine. See logs below:

Call to HttpSendRequestSync succeeded for port 80 with status code 200, text: OK SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER 4/2/2013 7:44:00 PM 32156 (0x7D9C)
    Http test request succeeded. SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER 4/2/2013 7:44:00 PM 32156 (0x7D9C)
Successfully performed Management Point availability check against local computer. SMS_MP_CONTROL_MANAGER 4/2/2013 7:44:00 PM 32156 (0x7D9C)

From the locationservice.log of the client, it is saying that the computer client is getting the packages from our DP/SCCM Server.

What may have been wrong here?

  • Hi,

Yes, it is already set before. I used Active Directory site boundaries for it. For our DP, we also set it to a protected site system and added all existing boundaries to it. Would that be a conflict? We have been like that long before, and we still manage to deploy packages. It just so happen that I am currently troubleshooting a problem regarding some computers not getting the packages properly.

    Any idea on this?

    Thanks!
