MAP - SQL Server Express Installation failure RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am trying to install MAP 5.0.3431.0 on a Dell PowerEdge 830 server running 2003 Enterprise SP2. This is primarily used as our WSUS server. The SQL installation fails with following message: Unknown error (0x24842db).

I realise that WSUS already uses another version of SQL, is this the likely cause of the issue?  Add or Remove Programs contains the following SQL entries:

SQL Server 2008 R2, SQL Server 2008 R2 Native Client, SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup (English), SQL Server 2008 R2 Setup Support Files, SQL Server Browser, SQL Server VSS Writer

I have tried to manually start the SQL Server (MAPS) service but this fails.

I do not want to uninstall SQL in case it affects WSUS, is there a way round it please?

Details of SQL Server Express installer log file are shown below.

    Thanks

    Adrian

  • Probably need to look at the contents of the SQL installer log file at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log\20101117_132124\Detail.txt to diagnose this further.

It may be easier to pre-install a SQL instance using the standalone SQL Express installer before installing MAPS.   The SQL installer UI may give you a better error message as to why the SQL install is failing.

You can obtain the SQL installer here: http://www.microsoft.com/express/Database/InstallOptions.aspx  (choose the "Database Only" download).

If you manually install SQL Express, make sure to set the default database collation order, this will be important to you as I assume you're in the UK.  You'll need to name the installed SQL instance "MAPS".  Instructions for doing this are here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/manually-installing-sql-server-for-use-with-map-toolkit.aspx

Once you've pre-installed a SQL instance named 'MAPS', just re-run the MAP Toolkit installer and it will find and use the preexisitng database engine instance automatically.
