Bandwidth Requirement for ATA

    Question

  • Before we run the ATA sizing tool, the customer would like to understand what will be the network bandwidth requirement for a typical ATA setup with 5000 users on a remote site (which is served by 5 DCs)

How often Microsoft releases update for ATA product and what is the average size of these updates to be downloaded from Internet.

  • Hello Gokulan,

As far as I know, there is no such statistics.

If you deploy the ATA Center and ATA Gateway at the same location, such as headquarter or data center, then, you don't need to worry about bandwidth.

However, if the ATA Gateway is deployed on the domain controller at remote site, while ATA Center is deployed in the head quarter, then the communication between ATA Gateway and ATA Center can consume some bandwidth of the dedicated link or Internet. The bandwidth consumption depends on the traffic collected from the domain controller on the ATA Gateway.

    Best regards,

  • Hello Gokulan,

Based on the update release history for ATA, usually, the update will be released in several months since last release. You can get the info for both history and new update release from the ATA blog below.

    https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/enterprisemobility/author/microsoft-advanced-threat-analytics-team/

Basically, the size for the most recent update package is around 350M, and you can update the ATA Center using Microsoft Update starting with ATA 1.6. The package size for ATA Gateway/ATA Lightweight Gateway is around 150M, and ATA Gateway/ATA Lightweight Gateway can get update from ATA Center directly.

ATA consists of three components: ATA Center, ATA Gateway and ATA Lightweight Gateway. ATA Gateway and ATA Lightweight Gateway collects and processes the data from DCs, and then sends it to ATA Center.

To measure the bandwidth requirements between ATA Gateway and ATA Center, I would recommend to monitor the traffic on the interface on ATA Gateway by using network monitoring tool, or in ease,  or for simplicity, you can use task manager or performance monitor.

    Best regards,
    Andy Liu

  • Thanks Andy.

The customer is very keen to know the bandwidth parameters required for typical setup from our experience. Do we have such statistics by any chance
