Unable to remove broken links from start menu RRS feed

  • Question

  • My organization is piloting the deployment of Office 2013 and we've come across an issue where Office 2010 pinned shortcuts are not removed from the start menu when it's uninstalled. The shortcuts are removed from "%appdata%\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\StartMenu" where they are stored, but "dead links" to these shortcut files remain on the start menu.

I'm currently poking around the registry to see if I can locate where these dead links are stored to get them removed. I know that I can right-click them and then select remove from list to get rid of them, but I will need to incorporate this solution domain wide without user interaction. This is why I need to locate where these particular "dead links" on the start menu are stored.

This is where I'm currently looking:

    • HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartPage2
    • HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAssist

Any insight as to where these items are stored would be greatly appreciated.

  • That looks very promising. Thank you very much for the advice! I'm going to dig into and see if we can make it work for us.
