Accessing SharePoint project site from outside PWA RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We are newer to Project Server 2010 and are in the process of setting up a new project site template from within Project Server for use with SharePoint 2010.  The links that are created seem to go through PWA. Is is possible for users outside of Project Server to access the site?  we have no live data being fed to the sites at this point and need users outside of project server to access the sites without burning a cal.  Once we get further in our roll-out, a larger number of users will access from within PWA.

    Thank you -

  • As the others have said, accessing the Workspace site of a project will consume a Project Server CAL - more specifically it happens when accessing the "Project Documents", "Risks", "Issues" or "Deliverables" lists that require the current user has the "Log On" right in Project Server.  Just loading an item from one of these lists will cause a query back to Project Server to find the linked items and burn the CAL.

Allowing externals into the workspace sites requires walking a fine line, and before you ask, breaking permissions on every library in the site collection is not a good idea.

    Cheers,

  • Hi lbr,

As far as I know, since Project Sites contain Project Server data (schedule PDP, deliverables, risks, issues lists), accessing them requires a Project Server CAL, eventhough they are not using neither PWA nor Project Pro.

    Hope this helps.

  • You need to have CAL license for each and every user who will have access to PWA and project site both.

If any user is having Project Professional 2010 license with them then they will automatic get one cal license.

It means you need not to buy cal license for them in order to give access in PWA or Project site under PWA.
