WSUS 3.2 displays new Windows 2012 R2 machines as being Windows 2000 RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • anyone have a good link to any patch or setting update that I need to get my WSUS 3.2 system running on Windows 2008 R2 to recognize my new Windows 2012 R2 servers correctly? Right now they show up in the system list but are detecting as Windows 2000.

  • This is a known issue which is already fixed in Windows Server 2012 R2, and will be fixed in the next update for WSUS 3.0 SP2.

  • Is there any idea when that update will be released?  Thanks in advance

  • Hi,

    same error than skinnersley...
We have install KB2828185 on our WSUS 3.0 SP2 (install on Windows Server 2008 R2) and  our 2012 R2 servers  are seen as Windows Server 2000 datacenter.

There is another KB to support Windows Server 2012 R2 on WSUS 3.0 SP2 ?

    Any ideas ?

    thanks

  • Hey Guys,

    same problem here.

And i also installed the latest Wsus patch KB2828185.

Are you guys are able to update a Windows 2012 R2 machine or is this only a display problem?

For me, updates from Wsus (2008R2) to Windows2012 R2 are not working. But to be honest I didn't checked if there are any at all...

    Kind regards

    chris

  • Any news as to when MS will put out this update to fix the incorrect server version?  My WS2012 R2 servers are reporting back to my WSUS 3.2.7600.226 console on W2K8 R2 as "Windows 2000 Datacenter Server".  Thx.

This is only a display issue. Unlike the issues for Win8/WS2012 last year, which were impacted by schema and coding changes (to support SHA-2 hashes), this is merely a function of the 6.3 build numbers not being available for string matching, so the wrong string is returned from the query.

You should be fully capable of patching 8.1/2012R2 systems from a WSUS v3.2.7600.256 server.

Well.. if your WSUS console really is v3.2.7600.226, then this is absolutely expected behavior.

First step is to make sure you're reporting the correct version number of your console.

Don't use About->Help; use the WSUS Administration Console's Main Node.

If this is a console-only machine, did you also install KB2734608 on the console-only machine(s)?

  • Hello Lawrence,

We have the same problem. Our WSUS 3.2.7600.226 is capable of patching Windows Server 2012 R2 but it displays it as Windows 2000 Datacenter Server. We already have KB2734608 installed on the WSUS server and on the management console (I think it was the fix about 2012/8.0 from last year).

Do you have the link to the KB that upgrades WSUS 3.2.7600.226 to WSUS 3.2.7600.256?

Edit: The installation of KB2828185 (file number WSUS 3.2.7600.262) does not fix the issue. The WSUS console still displays 3.2.7600.226 as version number both on the server and on the management workstation.

    Thanks

Correct. There is no "fix" for the About-> Help issue. That is a known defect in the Microsoft Management Console and is not likely to be fixed. The "fix" is to get the version number from the SNAP-IN as previously described, not the MMC Menu.

    Two points here.

    1. If you're seeing the wrong strings for Windows 8.0 or Windows Server 2012 *RTM* servers, that is because you have not (properly) applied KB2734608 to the WSUS v3 server.

    2. If you're seeing the wrong strings for Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 *R2* servers, that has already been answered in this thread TWICE (well, three times now):

A forthcoming patch for WSUS will fix this COSMETIC User Interface issue. A proposed release date has not been provided. Since the issue does not affect the ability to actually PATCH those Win8/WS2012R2 systems, it is not considered a high-priority patch. It will likely be bunded in whatever "next patch" of WSUS comes about for whatever operational reasons motivate such an item.

    Run this Script daily:

    UPDATE [SUSDB].[dbo].[tbComputerTargetDetail]
    SET [OSDescription] = 'Windows 8.1'
    WHERE [OSMajorVersion] = '6'
    AND [OSMinorVersion] = '3'
    AND [OldProductType] = '1'
AND ([OSDescription] <> 'Windows 8.1' or [OSDescription] IS NULL)

And this Script is for W2012R2:

    [code]
    UPDATE [SUSDB].[dbo].[tbComputerTargetDetail]
    SET [OSDescription] = 'Windows Server 2012 R2'
    WHERE [OSMajorVersion] = '6'
    AND [OSMinorVersion] = '3'
    AND [OldProductType] <> '1'
AND ([OSDescription] <> 'Windows Server 2012 R2' or [OSDescription] IS NULL)
    [/ocde]

Yes, dude. This is a known issue.. discussed weekly since R2 was released.

It'll get fixed when it gets fixed; in the meantime, deal with it.

Do we have any update release for this issue. We have WSUS 3.2.7600.226 in our environment and we are facing the same issue.

So, the first question is: Do you *really* have v3.2.7600.226 in your environment, or do you have a newer build?

The second question is this: Have you installed KB2938066 to your WSUS v3.2 server? (which actually DOES fix this issue for WSUS v3.2)
