locked
configuration for task sequence, vairibles , and XML for backing up profiles and restoring them on new machines. RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have 2000 client laptops and workstations for PC Refresh. Backups and restore tasks setting are not set as required so, in software center of the old machine there would be an Icon to backup profile and on the new machine there would be an Icon to restore profile. We are swapping out old laptop with new laptop 100 laptops a week.

Running task sequence to back up profile on old laptop and restore profile on new laptop there are some problems:

    • backup fails when theirs a locked file being copied
    • On the destination laptops the restore back up fails to show up in service center
    • Back ups taking some time to back up
    • we suppose to be able to back up any software used or user logged in in the pass 30 day but that's not working.

What is the best practice on doing this?

What is the best settings in the task sequence?

What variables can be added to fix these problems?

What should be set for XML files?

  • What is the best practice on doing this?

There is no such thing as a best practice -- looking for them is not helpful. Read the documentation and learn the tool. Match that to your requirements.

What is the best settings in the task sequence?

Settings for what? Best for you may not be best for someone else so asking for best is meaningless. Is there was a best for everyone, then there would be no need to configure anything.

What variables can be added to fix these problems?

There's no magic "fix it" variable. The values of variables configure different behaviors based upon what you want to happen.

What should be set for XML files?

That depends on what you want.

backup fails when theirs a locked file being copied

This is standard Windows behavior. You can use shadow copies if needed though.

On the destination laptops the restore back up fails to show up in service center

Do you mean Software Center? You need to check the deployment, the collection its targeted to, and whether the destination is in this collection.

Back ups taking some time to back up

It takes what it takes. Not sure what you are expecting.

we suppose to be able to back up any software used or user logged in in the pass 30 day but that's not working.

What's not working? What are you trying?

My key message here is that none of this works exactly as you want it without some configuration. You need to define your requirements and then configure the tool to meet those requirements. This is often not trivial as your requirements as unique to your organization and so you need to sit down, learn, experiment, and test.
