Understanding Volume Activation Programs RRS feed

  • Question

  • Currently we are using the command line KMS server (version 6.1.7601.17946) for our activation. However, we want to get this on a different server. From my reading it looks like there are three different programs that either do the same thing, or different parts of the entire process.

KMS Server (The program mentioned above)
    Volume Activation Management Tool
VA Services (Server 2012 R2 role)

I am not sure what each does and their differences. The server we want to move it to is Server 2012 R2 and we do have some 8.1 and 2012 R2 machines in the environment. Any information or other posts explain this would be great.

    Thanks.

  • Using the VA Services role in 2012 R2 I was able to stand up a KMS server. The wizard setup everything but the DNS entry, once I did that manually it worked correctly.

  • Just install new server and use the KMS activation server productkey. Google slmgr.vbs to check the status of your server/clients.
