  • Have you tried enabling the Advanced Filter Pack which comes with FS4SP? (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff383314.aspx)

It has a filter for dwg files which extracts text from Autocad drawings.

After enabling it, remember to refeed your content.

  • Hi Rush,

You can contact a company called First Trace located in Phoenix.  Their website is www.firsttrace.com.  They have an iFilter that does DWG and DXF.  This filter definitely works with FAST search server 2010.

    Hope this helps.  Good luck.

  • tlsdog,

third party filters are great, but why would you want to purchase an IFilter when .dwg files are already handled in the product as I mentioned above? Seems like a waste of money. Do you know if it will handle the files better regards to metadata?

  • Mikael is right - the advanced filter will get DWG & DXF documents into the search results.

But...  what about displaying these as clickable thumbnails in the search results?   I'm wondering if anyone crossed that bridge yet and if so, what preview tool did you use?

    Thanks in advance

    Mike

  • Hi Mike,

I think both Surfray (http://www.surfray.com/products/ontolica-search-preview.html) and BA-Insight (http://www.bainsight.com/Pages/sharepoint-fast-search-document-features.aspx) has preview modules which work for AutoCAD.

  • Thanks Mikael but,

BAInsights wants $60K, which is not feasible.  Their solution is like cracking a nut with a sledge hammer.   We also looked at Ontolica and they are in the same ballpark.

I recall a long time ago we picked up a free ifilter for tiff and it enabled us to index tiff files and get thumbnail previews for these in SP Search.   I presume this filter would work the same in FAST.

Our FAST implementation has indexed dwg&dxf no problem (thanks to the advanced filter pack in FAST) but the client insists on a preview for their autocad.   Office Web Apps only previews office docs.

Are you aware of an ifilter that may do for dwg's that that other one did for tiffs?

Just looking for something simple that wont break the bank.

  • Hi Mike,

For AutoCad no. I suspect it's easier to create a thumb of an image file than an AutoCad file.

You might look into if DWG Trueview has some api which let's you load up a file and generate an image.

  • Hi,

There is none. You have to go with an ifilter or content enrichment.

    Thanks,
