Asked by:
WSUS Client not downloading updates

Question
-
Hey all,
I have a server at home running Windows Server 2016 and the WSUS feature installed and configured (what I assume is correctly).
I also have a Windows 10 machine that's connected to the active directory set up on the server, however, when I search for updates on the Windows 10 box, it finds updates but sticks on "Downloading Updates 0%".
I have my group policy set to the following:
"Specify intranet Microsoft update service location: http://deathstar"
Aside from installing a few programs (VLC, Steam, Chrome), that's the only GPO.

Hi Winfried,
Thanks for your reply.
I tried this initially but unfortunately had the same issue. I'll change it back and let you know.

On which Port is WSUS installed? Have a look in IIS. After changing to
Port 8530 in GPO, you have to restart the whole Client and wair for 20
Minutes.Winfried

According to the WSUS Administration page on IIS, it's bound to port 8530 for HTTP and 8531 for HTTPS. I've restarted the client several times, but I'll restart the server just in case.
EDIT: Still stuck on 0%.

OK, Port 8530 is in your GPO and WSUS is installed on Port 8530.
EDIT: Still stuck on 0%.
OK, next Step. Start cmd.exe with Admin Rights:
net stop wuauserv
rd /s /q %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
shutdown -r -t 0Wait after Restart 15 Minutes, now search for Windows Updates.

Is this a fresh W10 1607 Client? If yes, install manually the latest

Hi abtekk,
Agree with Winfried, if http port Is 8530, please ensure the port number is appended on the WSUS URL.
And, there is a known issue for unpatched Windows 10 1607 clients, they may unable to download updates from WSUS server, after installing the monthly rollup, the issue may disappear:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4000825/windows-10-windows-server-2016-update-history
If after installing the latest monthly rollup for win10, the issue remains, we may enable IIS log, and check the IIS log for WSUS site and Windows Update log on clients to troubleshoot the issue deeply.
Best Regards,
Anne
