preview a full sized window from a taskbar thumbnail RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am running Window 10 Pro on a Dell Alienware computer. I also run Windows 10 on a Surface Pro 3.

On the Surface Pro 3 I can hover over an open program icon in the taskbar and one or more thumbnails appear above the taskbar icon depending upon how many instances of the program (e.g. Excel) are active. Then, without clicking, if I move my mouse icon so that it hovers over the thumbnail, a full screen image of that instance appears. When the mouse icon is moved off of the thumbnail (again, no clicking), the desktop reappears as it was before. I find this feature to be enormously helpful when I am working on a project that requires that I briefly reference information from several different open applications. I can look at and reference information in a full screen image of an separate open application and then quickly and seamlessly return to the main window I am working on.

I used to be able to do that with my Alienware computer but something has changed. When I hover over the taskbar icon, the thumbnails still appear over the taskbar but if I move the mouse to hover over the thumbnail, nothing happens. If I want to preview a full screen image of a (second) window in the thumbnail, I must click on the thumbnail. To get back to where I started, I must find and click the thumbnail for the original window on which I was working. It's a minor inconvenience, but since I know (from working with my Surface Pro 3) that the capability exists, I would like to re-implement it on my Alienware computer.

I have been unsuccessful researching the internet for a solution to my problem. Can anyone help??

  • Hi Alex,

The Peek should be enable in System properties \ Performance settings:

  • Thanks you Kate Li.

Although 'Enable Peek' was already selected in the 'Advanced Performance Options', somehow my 'Visual Effects -> Custom' button had been disabled. Once I clicked the 'Custom' radio button and applied the change the 'Enable Peek' began to work and the exact effect I was looking for became active.

I knew this had to be a simple fix, but I could not find the answer using internet searches. You hit the nail on the head!

  • Already did that (won't let me vote twice or I would), but I also marked your response with a vote...
