Setting/Verify Domain but don't route email internally RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We are trying to migrate abc.com domain to Exchange Online. Before we flip MX, we want to create mailboxes in Exchange Online and set their primary SMTP to @abc.com. But we don't want that internal emails be delivered to @abc.com. It should route @abc.com emails externally to their current server as MX is not flipped. Is it possible to verify domain in exchange online and also don't route internal emails to that domain.

The reason is we want to be ready before MX cutover so we can handle any issues instead of first do MX cutover and then add email aliases and change primary smtp.

  • No, it's not possible, once the domain is verified any matching internal recipients will get the mail. You can work around this by setting up some form of forwarding, and if you tell us which migration method you have chosen, we might be able to give you some pointers.

  • It is bringing new company into our organization. So using migration tool to migrate data.

We create new mailboxes for new company and after mx cutover, we start migrating data using tool.
