DPM 2007 Agent Upgrade Fail RRS feed

  • Question

  • After upgrading DPM 2007 to SP1 in prep for upgrade to 2010, I've got on agent that will not update.  It's on a web server that's also running sharepoint.  I've only found one article online that says this might be a problem and the work around is to trick the installation into thinking it has completed.

    Here's the error.

    ====================

Update protection agent on TMAWS03.tmant.texmed.org failed:

Error 313: The agent operation failed because an error occurred while running the installation program on TMAWS03.tmant.texmed.org.

Error details: The installation source for this product is not available.  Verify that the source exists and that you can access it (0x8007064C)

Recommended action: Review the log files on TMAWS03.tmant.texmed.org: [windir]\temp\msdpm*.log and take appropriate action. Retry the operation, and if the error persists, restart the computer and then retry the operation again.

When I look in that location, first it's not just ..DPM\Agents, it's ..\DPM 2011-01-24 04-35-21\Agents.  Then, inside Agents there is no RA folder to hold the dpmra.msi file.

What's going on with this installation?  Why won't it work?

  • Hi,

This path exists only a few seconds when installation/upgrade process is running, if I'm not wrong.

Try to manually uninstall the agent, remove C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft Data Protection Manager folder, and then - reinstall. If you have protected data on this server - then unprotect it without deleting the
replica/shadow copy volume, and protect again after the agent installation.

  • Thank you, I'll try that today.  Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.  I have it set to email on replies but I didn't get one.

Additionally, if I have servers with agents that don't complete their update (with a restart), will that impact a DPM reinstallation?  I'm in the process of upgrading to 2010 and the first step is to get my server to 2008 which means a DPM 2007 reinstall.

  • Okay, the problem is, when I run the Add Remove, it can't find the msi so it won't even remove it.  I just wipe out the whole folder on the client machine and do an install and it gives me the same error as before.

So, now I need to try and remove this properly and at the end of that, it still won't address the original problem of why it wouldn't update when all the other agents did.

Additionally, here's the blog post I found about this problem.  Fits exactly, even down to Sharepoint running on this server.

I don't really have a temporary machine to do this on save for my workstation, so any other ideas would be great.

  • Sorry for marking the previous one as answer by mistake.

Could you please try updating the agent manually using the below instructions:

    1. Obtain the update protection agent package from the "Data Protection Manager installation location \DPM\Agents\RA\2.0.8793.0" directory on the Data Protection Manager 2007 server.
      • For the x86 update
        i386\ Language ID \DPMAgentInstaller_KB959605.exe
      • For the x64 update
        amd64\ Language ID \DPMAgentInstaller_KB959605_AMD64.exe
    2. Run the appropriate DPMProtectionAgent2007_KB959605.exe package on each protected computer. You may first be presented with the installation wizard for the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package. Complete the installation wizard. When this is successfully completed, the Data Protection Manager 2007 SP1 installation wizard appears. Follow the instructions to complete the agent update.
    3. Open the Data Protection Manager Administrator Console on the Data Protection Manager 2007 server.
    4. Click the Management tab, and then click the Agents tab.
    5. Select the protected computers, and then verify that the agent version is listed as 2.0.8793.0.

  • Sorry for not getting back to you sooner.  I'll keep this marked in case I run into it again with DPM 2010.  I'm having bigger problems now upgrade the OS from WSS2003 to WS2008.
