How can we prevent Site Collection Administrators from creating sub-sites?

    Question

  • Can anyone tell me if it's possible to prevent Site Collection Administrators from creating sub-sites? Our requirement is that our business users who request a new site should be made site collection administrators so they have full control to their site, however we don't want them creating sub-sites because each site that gets created must first go through an approval process.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Michael

  • No easy way to setup an alert without custom programming that i am aware of.  AS to the audit, that's fairly easy using either PowerShell or a third party tool.  Just walk the tree of the site collections and check the AllWebs.count for each site collection.  Any site with a count of greater than one has sub sites.

  • Governance is your only real choice.  SCA's by definition have full control of all the settings in the site collection.  So even if you remove their permission to create sub sites they could just add it back in.  Set a policy, educate the SCAs on the policy and then audit every once in a while and enforce it.  There is no other way.

  • Thanks for the response Paul.  How would you recommend performing the audit?  Is there a specific tool you would use?  Also, is it possible to setup an alert so a group of folks can be notified as soon as sub-site is created across any of the site collections in our environment?

    Thanks,

    Michael
