same old story - WSUS upstream/downstream servers RRS feed

  • Question

  • after going through dozens of sites I still can't find a proper solution for the following problem:

    upstream server shows all downstream servers inside the wsus console;

    downstream server a has a total of 69% installed/not applicable

    downstream server b has a total of 76% installed/not applicable

    downstream server c & d have 0% installed/not applicable

    how do i get these informations of server c & d?

    everything else works fine; approving, assigning, downloading content, reporting also!

  • Hi zaikun,

    Check if my understanding is correct, downstream server c&d do not display the correct information with 0% installed/not applicable updates.

    1. What is the version of the WSUS server?

    1. Do WSUS c&d clients report to them correctly, can their clients download updates from them?

    2. Please check the event log of the WSUS servers in event viewer, check if there are errors;

    3. Please run server cleanup wizard and reindex WSUS database on these WSUS server, check if it could work:

    Reindex WSUS database:

    Best Regards,

    Anne

  • Hi Anne,

    yes, your understanding is correct: on the upstream server, the information about server c & d (not the wsus servers itself, but the clients that are receiving their updates from server c&d) is wrong regarding the installation status (0% installed/not applicable)

    1. WSUS Version 6.3.9600.18324 (2012 R2)

    2. yes, everything is correct: status, download etc (about 400 &  clients reporting)

    3. on the upstream server there is only one "warning" which is normal:

    No client computers have ever contacted the server.

    on the downstream servers also a "normal" warning:

    Some client computers have not reported back to the server in the

    last 30 days. 53 have been detected so far.

    4. cleanup and reindex is scheduled to run automatically at least once a month.

  • Hi zaikun,

    Check if manually run synchronization on downstream server C & D could work?

    Best Regards,

    Anne

  • Hi zaikun,

    Just to confirm if the problem still exits?

    And are you running any third party software on downstream server C&D, if yes, turn off them and check the result.

    Best Regards,

    Anne

  • Hi Anne,

    yes, there is at least a virus scanner installed.

    But so it is installed on all the other servers.

    Meanwhile server e and f have also reported successfully.

    The WSUS servers are set up exactly the same.

    Any more hints?

    Is there a way to track the report of the downstream servers towards the upstream server?

    maybe we can go deeper into this?

    for instance: is there a way to trace the reporting process towards the upstream server?

    maybe take a tcp dump? and if so, at what time should I do that? a few secs before the server syncs with the upstream server?

  • May I add an info:

    this post says at a certain point, that only devices with a total of "100% installed/not applicable" will be used for statistic:

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/7f1d1bac-67cf-43e9-b7d0-287955844e67/downstream-servers-installednot-applicable-0-?forum=winserverwsus

    is that correct?

    so for my understanding:

    downstream server A - 100 clients

    only 10 clients have 100% installed/not applicable ->

    on upstream server you get statistic for downstreamserver A -> 10% installed/not applicable

    downstream server B - 100 clients

    only 20 clients have 100% installed/not applicable ->

    on upstream server you get statistic for downstreamserver B -> 20% installed/not applicable

    downstream server C - 200 clients

    only 50 clients have 100% installed/not applicable ->

    on upstream server you get statistic for downstreamserver C -> 25% installed/not applicable

    is that correct?

    can anybody confirm?
