Server 2012 essentials unsigned crypt32.dll RRS feed

  • Question

  • Dear All,

I'm trying to install and run VirtualBox. The install goes ok but it won't run, giving a message in a error log relating to crypt32.dll. I've posted on the VirtualBox forums as well and they asked for the output of Sysinternal sigcheck.

On the server in question (Server Essentials 2012 (not R2) on and which came a Dell server) which hasn't been rolled out yet ->
    c:\windows\system32\crypt32.dll:
     Verified: Unsigned
     Link date: 23:33 30/09/2013
     Publisher: Microsoft Corporation
     Description: Crypto API32
     Product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
     Prod version: 6.2.9200.16727
     File version: 6.2.9200.16727 (win8_gdr.130930-1510)
     MachineType: 64-bit

By way of comparison on a Server 2012 R2 ->
    c:\windows\system32\crypt32.dll:
     Verified: Signed
     Catalog: C:\Windows\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE}\Package_3620_for_KB2919355~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.3.1.14.cat
[then a load of stuff about Signers and Counter Signers]
     Publisher: Microsoft Windows
     Description: Crypto API32
     Product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System
     Prod version: 6.3.9600.16431
     File version: 6.3.9600.16431 (winblue_gdr.131015-2301)
     MachineType: 64-bit

[I wanted R2 but Dell said .. "you didn't ask for R2.." me: "..assumed would get the latest.. R2 been out for months" .. anyway >:(  ]

Question is: Is it right the crypt32.dll is unsigned? If not how can I fix it?

    Thanks.

  • You want to run virtual box on top of the Essentials server?

  • Hello Grey.. gave it a go.. found and corrected some 'issues' but crypt32.dll still unsigned and vbox still fails.

No mention of crypt32.dll in CBS.log.

  • And sogo is?

Virtual box is not something I'd recommend on top of any Domain controller.

  • I dunno.  Sounds like malware to me.  I mean it should be signed and sfc is finding "problems?  I think I would try a fresh install

  • .. I ran sfc twice and no 'errors' or actions on second run.
Maybe will reinstall.. Dell installed it with a 60gB C:.. 24gB free now.. and it's not been used!

Sogo is an open source Exchange replacement... If MS had done a replacement for SBS 2011 I'd have got that.

    Cheers.

  • SFC on Essentials will always find problems and it mangles up the IIS site.

  • BTW on my win7 crypt32.dll              4/13/2008      5.131.2600.5512     Not Signed          N/A

Crypt32.dll is unsigned.  This is normal.  So what exactly does virtual box want?

What's the error you are getting?

  • .. on our Win 7 64bit: v6.1.7601.18277 is signed, as is v 6.3.9600.16431 on Win 8.1 32 & 64 bit.

I started looking at crypt32.dll as "bird" from oracle said in the VBox forums:

"WinVerifyTrust fails on crypt32.dll, from the VBox perspective it looks like it may have been modified or replaced, which is a non-continueable error for us."

I appreciate that VBox is not MS (though apparently MS sfc isn't good for MS Essentials ;) ) but as I asked.. In Server 2012 Essentials, is it ok that crypt32.dll is unsigned... seems like not.
