DPM 2012 R2 - re-booted: Volumes Missing, but they aren't (!) RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

So I made the mistake of rebooting my DPM server

When it came back DPM alerted that All volumes were missing

There was not obvious issues with the disk - the volumes are all fully visible, online and seemingly available the one oddity was that some of them had gained drive letters which I removed (they had drive letters in addition to the volume mounting info)

I have rescanned, and at the moment 4 out of 24 protected items are OK, here is an example:

This shows one protection group - the volume details are:

    M:\ on dfs-eu-lux001.intra.rakuten.co.jp c:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012 R2\DPM\DPM\Volumes\Replica\File System\vol_9acab14b-69d6-404a-802a-aa36c636217c\7f4c11ee-1687-4ca2-af9e-b5a378d861a8\Full\

    M:\ on dfs-eu-lux002.intra.rakuten.co.jp c:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012 R2\DPM\DPM\Volumes\Replica\File System\vol_a21aeb22-8c81-415f-85f1-5240a3b90d7e\3611358b-9b2a-4747-87ad-e3a62acdeebd\Full\

    T:\ on dfs-eu-lux002.intra.rakuten.co.jp c:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012 R2\DPM\DPM\Volumes\Replica\File System\vol_96a5dbf0-2da7-46cc-9541-c2f4ac67987c\894c77d9-cc80-47bb-8626-5ac53a324149\Full\

    H:\ on dfsuser-eu-lux.intra.rakuten.co.jp c:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012 R2\DPM\DPM\Volumes\Replica\File System\vol_357ef48d-43b9-4efa-a82c-5105349aab93\a6826fd5-c5f7-4f87-8c08-983dea029cf0\Full\

and the inactive protection member is the small (fairly static) volume that I have been playing with - it was failing with "volume missing" so I removed it from the protections group (where, annoyingly it tells me On-premises protection replica is available but when I attempt to re-add it I get the message "DPM cannot protect this data because its replica or recovery point volume is missing/offline ID 33142)

As far as the volumes go - they seem fine (below is disk manager and below that I've pasted diskpart information

I've been wrestling with this for most of yesterday and am now officially stuck so any advice would be welcome

    Specifically:

What can I do to recover from this?

What should I do to prevent it in the future?

At the moment I can (if DPM is to be believed, which at the moment I am doubtful about) recover my online azure backups - but will lose these if I delete the existing disk volumes to start again - If I cannot recover what would anyone suggest I can or should do next?

    Cheers

    Al
