First a major negative. The basic installation no longer installs a no-size-limit database system. Instead it is restricted to 4GB (yes you can extend this to maybe 22GB using other storage but it's messy)--------------Pluses- use of ribbon (a plus?)- much better administration(for instance instead of needing to open the log file settings separately (or ca 15 times) there is one page with all the settings listed where they all can be amended.)- ability to use Office 2010 additional functionsFrankly I've not noticed much else - there's nothing that really grabs you like the recycle bins and better versioning last time around.

The OOB limit is 4GB for the Basic installation (or Advanced + single-server option installation) which installs a (normal) copy of SQL Server 2008 Express. (*)
(The equivalent in WSS 3.0 was a special version of SQL Server 2005 Express called Windows Internal Database that had no limit.)
There continues to be no limit when full SQL Server versions are used as the db system.
(*) You can have larger databases than 4GB by using additional storage through a technique (RBS - Remote Blob Storage) but I don't fancy messing with it.

"For all of you guys who has WSS 3.0 running on Windows Internal Database, when you install SharePoint Foundation 2010, it installs SQL 2008 Express which has the 4 GB limit. So when you are thinking about upgrading to 2010 and have a Content DB larger than 4 GB you got a few options:
-
- Move the full blows SQL
- Move to SQL 2008 R2 Express (10 GB Limit)… Read more here.
- Install and Configure Remote BLOB Storage. "

Mike,
Are you saying that the OOB size limit for Foundation 2010 is 4GB? I couldn't quite work it out from your statement above?
Does this limit apply even if connected to a full SQL Server rather than SQL Express?
Thanks,
Kyle.Thursday, February 25, 2010 10:48 PM -

About the 4GB limit of SQl Server Express, it looks like Sql Server 2008 R2 express 2008 provides now 10 GB.

I'd like to see a link where it says that.
I'm fairly sure I checked when SQL Server 2008 Express came out and it was still 4GB.
If it's now 10GB it must (?) only be since R2.
(Off-Topic: It makes you wonder why SPF 2010 has a 4GB limit though. We'll need to all recommend using SQL Server 2008 Express R2 if the 10GB is true. Note: 2010 questions go to one of the 2010 forums here - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/sharepoint2010)

This is by no means the sort of URL I was looking for.
I need to see a URL that points to an official Microsoft statement before I believe such a major change.
(I would also trust a Blog more if it were written in good English. But even then I wouldn't trust it enough - far too many people in the past said in Blogs that the Basic installation of WSS 3.0 was a database with a limit of 4GB)
and the "Read more here" link you mention (from the Priyo blog) goes to a page with the Title "
"Welcome to the MSDN Blogs!" that has nothing at all about database limits. So the jury is still out on this one.

Finally ...
Thanks, Kamlesh. (How sneaky of them. They should have been shouting this from the rooftops. Pity my book has already gone through its final proof reading and is being printed. I'd have loved to included the recommendation to ignore Basic Installation and use SQL Server 2008 Express R2 instead.)

The below was extracted from MSDN Blog, which I am unable to locate now (FYI - Check the last question in the FAQ)
Is the database size limit increased in all editions of SQL Server 2008 R2 Express?
Yes, SQL Server 2008 R2 Express with Tools and SQL Server 2008 R2 Express with Advanced Services will allow 10GB databases as well.
What about CPU and memory limits? Are any other limits changed in SQL Server 2008 R2 Express?
No, the database size limit is the only limit we updated in SQL Server 2008 R2 Express. SQL Server 2008 R2 Express is still limited to 1 CPU and 1 GB or RAM.
Was the database size limit changed for previous versions of SQL Server Express?
No, the database size limit in previous versions of SQL Server Express (including SQL Server 2005 Express and SQL Server 2008 Express) stays unchanged at 4GB.
Was the database size limit changed in November CTP for SQL Server 2008 R2 Express?
No, the 10 GB database size limit is only available in the final release of SQL Server 2008 R2 Express and not in previous Community Preview releases.
UPDATE: OK, I got the source link. Its here :-)
