DFS on site with no local DC RRS feed

    We are about to set up a branch office to be connected by site-to-site VPN. It will be on its own AD site, and will have a server that hosts DFS shares needed at the site, and is also a DFS Namespace Server. However, the site will NOT have a DC.

    If the WAN is down for some reason, for how long do DFS clients (XP SP3) cache DFS referrals? After that, will attempts to browse DFS shares fail?

    DFS cache can be changed in Properties of namespace.

    Use Windows 2008 R2 as an example, you can right click on the namespace and choose Propertis, go to Referrals tab, change the Cache duration value.

    You should still able to access the share unless the DFS namespace server is down.
