    A major change in the new forums is the functioning of the Reply window. The new "floating" window allows viewing of the entire thread while replying, and provides better "back button" functionality after posting. These are good goals, but I find the implementation so flawed that frankly I preferred the old forums, where (on a tabbed browser) I would always right-click the Reply button and reply in a new tab.

    I have played with the new Reply window in both IE6 and the SeaMonkey browser, and to a lesser extent Firefox. I have not tested on IE7.

    1. I find the operation of the scroll bar of the main window (which extends the entire height of the window, while actually scrolling only the upper part) to be very unusual. This design also appears related to many of the glitches I see.

    2. In IE6, when I scroll the main window, the Reply portion of the window bounces up and down. This does not happen in SeaMonkey/Firefox. (No great loss for me, because IMHO the forums are unusable in a non-tabbed browser in any case).

    3. If I click the FontName or FontSize menus, and scroll the main window while the popup menu is displayed, the popup moves with the upper part of the window (does not remain fixed in the Reply window).

    4. On Firefox/SeaMonkey if I click the FontName or FontSize menu while the main window scrollbar is not scrolled to the top, the popup menus appear in the wrong position. They might even be off-screen (this initially caused me to believe that these menus did not work in SeaMonkey/Firefox).

    5. Although the overall layout works reasonably well when maximized on my 1280x1024 screen, at other main window sizes it does not work well. Part of this is due to the fact that the height of the Reply window appears to be fixed, independent of the main window height.

    Frankly, I think the design of the Reply window is just very poorly implemented. For me it is a major usability issue compared to NNTP, where (in my Mozilla newsreader) the Reply window is a true floating (popup) window that can be positioned where you want (in particular on a second screen). Could this not be done in the forum interface?

    I just want to add that even if the "Alert me when someone responds to this post." checkbox is ticked by default in the reply window, it does not automatically subscribe me to the thread I am posting in after I have submitted my reply. I'm not sure if there are others facing this, but I've noticed this since the new reply window features have kicked in.

    I now have to manually click the "Alert me" link on top of the page to get alerts now.

    Another work around to get is to untick the checkbox, and re-tick it again, and then I will get subscribed to the thread.


    Let's experiment. Did you get an email about this post of mine?

    First thing is to go in your settings and make sure your email account is set up and correct.

    Since the alert issue and IE10 compatibility are different issues than this one, I think this specific issue (from the OP) is fixed. However, if your issues persist, please open a new thread with a more accurate title.

    It would be nice to have a "classic" reply window, where it takes to you a separate page (like the old forums, and pretty much 100% of all forum software in existence), until these issues are settled.

    This appears to be fixed (by various updates over 3+ years).

    Not in IE10 (on W8).   It's worse there (e.g. no toolbar at all and the Edit frame is tiny--among several usability defects).   Thankfully it's working in IE9 (on W7) so now I will have to try to remember to try using IE10 Compatibility View when I'm back on W8.

    FWIW I am trying this Edit with the old IE10 PP (still on W7).  Same problem.   It does come up with Browser Mode IE10 Document Mode IE9 Standards.

    As I indicated there is no toolbar but there is a partial list of buttons.   The most missed button is HTML.   But I just remembered some testing I did on the QA Sandbox showed that with the new implementation of the HTML Source Edit frame I do not require a button to see that--just switch to No CSS mode.   <eg>

    Good. Can we open IE10 as a new thread with "IE10 Compatibility" in the title? I don't think we're shooting for compatibility with it yet, but the team should at least start thinking about it.

    Does the IE10 Compatibility View work with the forums?
