LoadState: "LookupAccountSid failed"

    Question

  • I'm attempting a Task Sequence using hardlinks offline. Files are being captured fine but the restore part is bombing out. My smsts.log is saying "Not enough storage is available to complete this operation." but the loadstate.log is saying "LookupAccountSid failed for S-1-5-21-3233480790-567902233-3410887031-71480" and "USMT error code 14: [gle=0x00000012]". The only thing I can think is that the name of the computer is changing during the imaging process. Could this be causing the issue and is there any way to get around it? Thanks!

  • I don't know what exactly happened before or during your migration, but that admin account is really your problem.

The restore excludes the local profiles via /ue:JS-RM105-HSCP3P1\* while the admin account looks like this JS-RM105-HSCP3P\admin.

Look at the two prefixes (that I made bold) they are not the same and that's why that account is not excluded.

  • In this case don't look at the error in the SMSTS.log, as it's misleading, but look only at the error in the loadstate.log.

Error 14 USMT_ERROR_USE_LAC - Means unable to create a local account because /lac was not specified

In other words a local account is being migrated and doesn't exist in the new situation. To allow USMT to create that account you need to specify /lac.

  • That's interesting because though I'm capturing all user accounts, I do not have the "Restore local computer user profiles" option checked, so it shouldn't be attempting to restore any local user accounts. But it also didn't restore any domain profiles either. The command line fed into loadstate is: C:\_SMSTaskSequence\Packages\PRI00047\amd64\loadstate.exe C:\_SMSTaskSequence\UserState /ue:JS-RM105-HSCP3P1\* /c /hardlink /nocompress /l:C:\Windows\CCM\Logs\SMSTSLog\loadstate.log /progress:C:\Windows\CCM\Logs\SMSTSLog\loadstateprogress.log /i:C:\_SMSTaskSequence\Packages\PRI00047\amd64\MigApp.xml /i:C:\_SMSTaskSequence\Packages\PRI00047\amd64\MigUser.xml /i:C:\_SMSTaskSequence\Packages\PRI00047\amd64\MigDocs.xml /i:C:\_SMSTaskSequence\Packages\PRI00047\amd64\Wallpaper.xml

  • It could also be, because the specified user account is only a SID. Is that by any change of a none-existing account (because it won't be excluded by /ue:JS-RM105-HSCP3P1\*)?

  • It's possible I suppose. At some point someone has created a local accounts called 'admin', as indicated by this line: "The account JS-RM105-HSCP3P\admin is chosen for migration, but the target does not have account SEVHSCP3P1\admin." However, I still told it to not attempt any local profiles and it did not restore any domain profiles because of the LookupAccountSid issue. I hope I understood your question correctly!

  • Your close to what I'm trying to say.

By not checking the box Restore local computer user profiles the following command is added to your command line /ue:JS-RM105-HSCP3P1\*. This will exclude the local accounts that started with the computer name, but it doesn't exclude the weird SID account. That's why I think it has problems with that specific account, as it can't resolve it to a domain account and doesn't have to exclude it.

  • Okay, that makes sense now... and it is possible that the specific SID account doesn't exist, but it gave the same error for an account that I know exists. I just tried the same task sequence on another computer and it worked perfectly. In the case of the failed task sequence, I got the LookupAccountSid error 17 times (one for each domain account that was on the machine) followed by the local "admin" account. The SID account I posted in my original question was a domain account.

Now I'm even more confused since it worked on another machine. It seems like an isolated issue, but I would like to know what caused it because this particular computer was a bad one for it to mess up on. :)

    This is my loadstate.log:

  • I don't know what exactly happened before or during your migration, but that admin account is really your problem.

The restore excludes the local profiles via /ue:JS-RM105-HSCP3P1\* while the admin account looks like this JS-RM105-HSCP3P\admin.

Look at the two prefixes (that I made bold) they are not the same and that's why that account is not excluded.

  • Oh wow... I didn't even notice that. Very strange. Would it be wise to enable "Restore local computer user profiles" and set a password? Thank you so much for you help on this!

  • It would help you with this specific case. Just keep in mind that, as long as it's enabled, it will count for every migration you perform.

  • Well, there shouldn't be that many local accounts out there, so I'm not too concerned about it... but I'm definitely concerned about my hardlink migrations blowing up. Thanks again for your help!
