My First Wiki Publications - Empowering Windows Desktop RRS feed

All replies

  • So, if you checked out my first Wiki page 'Add a Custom Toolbar to Windows.'

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/4426.aspx

I've now added another one - Quick Launch Toolbar - Evolution

    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/4432.aspx

I can already see the need for a Cover page to Nest both these pages onto - and adding some other related topics. :)

Of course both pages are still pretty raw. But it's a starting point.. pkn

  • To enable further development - the page  'Quick Launch Toolbar - Evolution - Revolution!',  needs to be further subdivided into Topics.

These include so far, but won't be limited to:

They search for it or they click a link. I suppose that's why you are linking from here, but people aren't likely going to find these links. I suggest blogging about it, tweeting, and you can also link to the pages from the appropriate portal pages that are listed on the Wiki home page.

    Thanks!

  • By the way, it's great that you're writing articles about Windows 7. I think there's a lot of room to grow and need for content in that area. Thanks!

  • Hi ed, you said.. " I suggest blogging about it, tweeting, and you can also"

Yes, I've thought about blogging and tweeting, never had a reason to start either before though really. I'll look into these soon. Thanks.

I can also think about links to my Windows Live site that could perhaps be useful in this regard too. :)

People certainly couldn't find these thinks here in the forums if they were never posted here. Therefore I think 'unlikely' is a step up from not possible.

Searching seems tricky btw. If the article's title doesn't include the phrase searched for, if the search engine doesn't search within the text directly, and/or the tags don't include a diversity of related possibles, then they seem to be invisible. Within the Wiki itself there are additional means to search Wikis - but outside the Wikis trying to find specific pages can result in needing to wade through thousands of search results..

    Thanks for your input, pkn

  • Hi ed, I tried to start a blog on the TechNet Blog site. But as I couldn't see where or how to do this I enquired in Feedback as to how I start a blog. This was the response from TechNet Site Support.

"Are you a Microsoft FTE? If you are not, you cannot directly create a new blog. You will need to ask a Microsoft FTE to start a blog for you, and then have them add you as an author."

So, at least until I determine what/who a 'Microsoft FTE' is - I guess I can cross off that option for now.. pkn

This was an interesting conversation you had. It has me thinking about a few possibilities. Send me an email. I'd like to talk. My address is EdPrice at Microsoft.

ahh. Of course! and here's me thinking along the lines of. MCC. MVP. MSFT, MSFTE and FTE might have stood for something like File Technology Engineer.. or similar. <g>

  • Sounds good.

Since the point of this thread was to give feedback...

    - Left justify your links and lists.

    - Make the non-headers 12px font size. So that the larger text is the header and then the smaller text are the links or paragraphs in the Header sections.

Are you going to add information about the different toolbars now?

    Thanks!

Not yet, I thought I'd keep adding Lists of contents to the other Articles first.

  • Hi all. If anyone has pics of Vista or Win7 toolbars that you'd like to add to the 'Toolbars Available - Windows Vista' or 'Toolbars Available - Windows 7' Wikis. Please do! :)

If you're really keen consider the same for 'Toolbars Available - Windows XP', though I've not had a chance to update the formatting on this one as yet..

  • Hi, I find I really need to get back more to domestic/account type things that I've neglected recently since my Laptop starting playing up and later crashed and was then recovered again. And it's still not fully repaired as yet.. I'll be involved on/off in forums and wikis still and likely pick up where I left off soon enough with plans for an even more active future ahead thereafter! Many thanks to everyone who's been here to help me along the way! And there are many great people I've met here - you should all be very proud of what you've built so far..

Lots more to be added to this series of Wikis alone, and more possible topics for expansion as Ed mentioned! Also there are many other Wikis to choose from within the Wiki itself. So with the many rewards available in the wikis for active participants, really why not! :)

So here's to a bigger & better future to ALL ahead! Hip Hip. Hooray! pkn

(My hopefully short - self-imposed, semi-retirement will now commence.)

  • Realising it's not possible to add to a page that doesn't exist - newly added:

    Toolbars Available - Windows XP

I removed Tablet PC - and WMP, having not actually used XP myself (skipping from Win98 to Vista) I'm unsure what IS possible as yet for the XP toolbars. If you know feel free to edit - add a few pics and text. I'll be editing this one and perhaps a few others from this series for a while yet, so please wait a little though if you're planning any major edits on these pages! :)

  • Hi All, I've revamped the 'Toolbars Available' pages for XP, Vista and Win7. Also added some infor for them in the Vista and Win7 ones too. Thanks to Ed's edits I've learned about 'blockquote' usage so this has helped with formatting greatly.

There's been also a further addition to the group - Personalize Your Windows Desktop

And feel free to add text or pics into any of the Articles. Or comment on how I could improve them. :)

To be honest though using the Toolbars hasn't been one of my usual activities (well apart from Quick Launch - Vista). So I'm also learning about them as I write these articles. There seems to be a problem with some of them though. Specifically iTunes - trying to select this results in either nothing occurring or worse, explorer resets.. And also WMP on selecting seems to do nothing also..

If anyone 1. Has these toolbars working on their system, please mention this, and how to fix them when broken(?).

and 2. If anyone knows how Windows stores the list of Toolbars displayed in the menu - whether it be in a folder somewhere, or in the registry etc. Could you please submit info here..

    Thanks again.

    Regards, pkn

  • A topic that hasn't been covered so far in regard to Toolbars is of course this one.. :)

Unlocking the Taskbar - Windows Toolbars

So far it's only a stub Article, but it's also certainly information required for effective use of any toolbar!

Again, help to improve this and other Articles if you can.

  • Hi. Just wondering if I should divide the topics listed in the Contents page - 'Empower your desktop', into perhaps: General - XP - Vista - Win7 - subheadings instead of having it all in one long list. Might make it easier for users to find pages for their OS more quickly that way. (?)

For graphics. What's the best combination to use to snap screenshots? I'm just using the snipping tool, or else prtscrn > MSPaint > snipping tool. But the quality of the pic either way isn't optimum really..

Meanwhile though I've got a bunch of the earlier pages needing to be edited to standardise their formatting, fonts etc. with more recent Articles. This should greatly improve the look of some of these pages too.. Also the "work in progress" markers need adding to more pages.

So back to it, :) pkn

For those who wonder, the "blockquote" tag (in HTML) is just how to indent something. You can use the toolbar button to indent and then clean it up in the HTML if you need to. Another option is to use a bullet list to indent lines.

    Thanks PKN!

Yes, I agree that the OS division makes the most sense. Great idea!

Even though it isn't the highest quality image, I recommend the Snipping Tool. It instantly optimizes the image to a small file size that would otherwise require a higher-end software program like Photoshop.

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi Ed, you wrote. "Yes, I agree that the OS division makes the most sense. Great idea!"

okay thanks Ed. so I'll do this as a priority then..

Also as I don't have a higher-end graphics program handy - then snipping tool it is! :)  I certainly didn't want to put in lots of images that would need to be replaced later - so I've delayed adding many pics so far. But will try adding a few more soon.

And yes, certainly does help! Thanks again, pkn.
