Error 'This Web Part was unable to load' when creating new project RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

(I work with the CU FEBRUARI 2012 updates)

After creating a new project in Project server 2010 I get this error messages:

This Web Part was unable to load.

    Information that may be
useful in solving this problem was written to the Unified Logging Service (ULS)
log on the Project Server with the following ID:

    ada74f19-19ac-4d46-80e9-8db0d8f48b14

For more information, contact your Project Server administrator.

(The problem occurred only on the webpart ‘ProjectFields’. Another webpart like ‘resources’ give no error message.)

I get also a script error on that page:

  • FYI,

I escalate this problem to Microsoft Support and it has something to do with indexes that are not properly updated.
Running the stored procedure ‘exec sp_updatestats’ on the 4 project db’s fixed our problem.

    Thanks for the support.

  • Hi,

    Thanks for the fast response!

I found this article already: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/brismith/archive/2010/06/22/project-server-2010-cannot-create-or-edit-projects-in-project-center.aspx

Only when I ask the properties list, I don’t see a parameter ‘PWAURL’. On our test en quality environments, there isn’t also a parameter PWAURL and there we don't have this problem.

(Maybe not relevant, but our Project server 2010 is a clean install and not an upgrade from 2007.)

This is the list when I run the PowerShell command:

  • Johan,

Could you specify what command you put in?

    I entered the following command:

    $Web = Get-SPWeb http://project.contoso.com/pwa

    $Web.AllProperties| Format-Table

The output of this command gave me the "PWAURL"

  • Hi Robin,

In our Test enviremont we have installed the PWA directly under https://projects.companyname.com

Then we decided to put the PWA under managed path "sites" like SharePoint works.
    A new PWA should then:

    sites/PWA2
    sites/PWA3

In Quality and Production we have the PWA under https://projects.companyname.com/sites/icts

Then I open PowerShell as administrator and run this command

    $Web = Get-SPWeb https://projects.companyname.com/sites/icts
    $Web.AllProperties| Format-Table

    Result: No ”PWAURL”

    Regards,

    Johan

  • Hi Johan,

I tried to reproduce the problem. I made a setup like how you described. I too didn't get the PWAURL when I checked the properties of the webpage. However I do not have the same symptoms you are currently having with the "ProjectFields" web part. Mine seems to work. But I do think the problem lies in that the PWA thinks it is a normal site. Because I do not know the architecture surrounding your web applications it’s hard to say what you can try next.

Maybe anyone else might have an idea?

Sorry I could be of more help.

    With kind regards,

    Robin Kruithof

  • Hi Robin,

    Thanks for your time!

We working know a couple of months with Project server 2010. The problem started a month ago.We didn’t have this problem before.
And I can’t remember that I change something on server side at that moment.

I’m going to try with installing the CU April 2012…

    Regards,

    Johan

  • An update…

(I didn't install the CU april 2012 update.)

Meanwhile I have a copy of my PWA in a test environment where I can reproduce the problem.
I deleted all the projects and the problem was gone. I could create/edit new projects without the error message.

So I tried to delete 1 project at a time and see when the error message was disappeared.

When there were 4 projects left the problem was gone! So I thought the corruption was in the last project that I deleted.
I created the PWA again from the backup and deleted this project but the problem stays. Again deleting projects random and when 3 projects are left the problem was gone.

    Stuck again…
