AppV - File Type Association, multiple applications with same FTA, only last published works. Any suggestions? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Greetings,

    Talking about File type associations. Only the "last app added wins", other fails to load. Has anyone got any solution to fix this?

    Situation: I am sequencing applications A, B, C having same file type association. Independently all works excellent, but when i publish B upon A, and then also Publish C, only C application FTA works, rest other two throws an error or just does not load.

    Probably it tries to get into the latest application directory looking for file association, but it rejects.

    Any possible solution? Your feedback will be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

  • What is the Error.

    What you are asking involves managing OLE/COM document objects directly rather than via file type extensions/associations. Since FTA are published serially to HKCU, you are correct in that the last one will win.

    Assuming you want to be able to deploy all three applications to the same desktop, the best bet is to have custom file extensions.

  • Sure,

    While some recommend using the App-V Server Management console to modify FTA's - your best bet and the most flexible option is to modify the FTA configuration within the package during the sequencing process. This ensures that the FTA's will be in place within the package and that will offer deployment flexibility.

  • Are you saying that you have 3 different apps with the same FTA and you want each of those apps to know when to launch when you open a file?

    The scenario I've created in my head is a computer with 3 different PDF reader apps where only the last installed reader works.

    You can't make that work as far as I know.

  • Hi All,

    I am also facing an issue similiar to that FTA.

    I am sequencing OneNote 2007 and it contains other shortcuts like Microsoft Office Tools.When i open any .jpg it opens with default Windows Photo Viewer in Windows 7 Clean Build.Whereas with sequenced application it opens with Microsoft Office Picture Manager shortcut and this shortcut is available in the sequenced application.

    Please find the following registry information after publish in the registry.

    *****************************************
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg]
    "Content Type"="image/jpeg"
    @="OISjpegfile"
    "PerceivedType"="image"
    "SoftGridSource"="{CD1373F7-5144-4A20-9A75-488D79DE3B12}"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\OpenWithList]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\OpenWithList\ehshell.exe]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\OpenWithProgids]
    "jpegfile"=""
    "OISjpegfile"=hex(0):

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg\PersistentHandler]
    @="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"
    *****************************************

    Now my customer is looking forward to open the .jpg file with default one and not with MS Picture Manager.

    All the FTA`s included in the “Microsoft Office Picture Manager” shortcut are selected as “Merge With Local Key” as if we changed them to “Override Local Key” , .jpg file still opening with sequenced application.

    I have heard that Softgrid FTA`s will be override the existing local registry keys.

    Kindly help me in resolving the issue and to keep my FTA`s inside the bubble itself without overwriting existing ones?

    I have heard that publishing the application per user basis using SFTMIME command and that also didn`t help.

    Thanks,

    Srinivas.

  • I'm facing the same problem now. When I launched  a FTA app, it actually tryied to launch the last published, and the error is "Unexpected File Type".

  • Hi,

    I had the same problem with Microsoft Office 2000 and 2007. Both use <.xls>.  I only wanted <.xls> open in Office 2000.

    The answer I have found is to modify the registry by removing the Open Command Key associated with this EXtension.

    Afther removing it, I put another Open Key command associated with Office 2000.

    REG DELETE HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Excel.Sheet.8\Shell\Open\command /f

    REG ADD HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Excel.Sheet.8\Shell\Open\command /VE /T REG_SZ /D "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\EXCEL.exe"

    And I put a .Bat a each startup for the peoples with the two FTAs.
