Best way to migrate to a virtual machine RRS feed

  • Question

  • MOSS 2007 established since 4 years and used internally enough to be a "production" server.

Looking for the best disaster recovery strategy according our internal needs, turned out that running MOSS on a daily backed-up Hyper-V virtual machine will be a good choice.

How can I accomplish this in the best end fastest way ? I also can use another PC, i.e change url (http://newserver.local)

My idea is to totally export using stsadm and reimport into new server using stsadm ... but I don't know how to update all URLs pointing to old one .. and what other probably issues will I have to deal with.

    Please can you help ?

    Thanks!!

  • Hi,

It's a good idea to use STSADM.EXE as you said and reimport into new server..

Regarding URL's and how to update them.. you need to configure it on 3 places..

    • DNS ( A record )
    • IIS ( Biindings )
    • Alternate Access Mapping ( Intranet/Extranet/Default zone/..)

    Hope it helps, Gokan

  • Hi,

If you want to backup your MOSS farm, I would suggest you to take DB backups of your databases. take full once a week and incremental on daily basis. Also take backups of 12 hive and virtual directories.

I hope this will help you out.
