How DPM backup .mdf and .ldf file when database is online RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am interested to know how DPM backup, .mdf and .ldf file when database is online. I think VSS perform this action and store backup temporary in server.

  • Hi,

yes VSS will be used, but dont backup the MDF and LDF Files from Filesystem, do it with the SQL Options, so it will be backed up with SQL VSS and SQL will take note about the Backup

  • Hi Rahul,

DPM uses the SQL VSS Writer to ensure the database is in a consistent state before taking the backup.  For databases in Full recovery mode, DPM performs express full backup by tracking block level changes on the .mdf and.ldf files and only transferring changed blocks since the last express full.  Incremental backups are done at the synchronization frequency and will only bring over log entries since the last incremental synch time.   For DB's in simple recovery mode, DPM will only perform express full backup.
