How to add an Unsubscribe link in email headers that Outlook would recognise?

    Question

  • Hello,

First, to clarify, this question is about email sent to outlook, not from Outlook. In other words, we are sending email from Linux/sendmail. The problem is on the receiving side (Outlook). So here's the question:

When we send our email newsletter to customers, we add an Unsubscribe header that looks like this:

    List-Unsubscribe: <http://example.com/unsub?u=user@customer.com>

When a message is viewed on outlook.live.com Outlook shows this:

"Getting too much email from [SENDER]? You can unsubscribe"

Clicking on "You can unsubscribe" shows this:

"[SENDER] hasn't given us any information to help you unsubscribe, so we'll block everything sent from the following sender: [EMAIL_ADDRESS]"

So the question is: What is the format of Unsubscribe link that Outlook recognises?

    Thanks!

  • Well, I spent some time researching this and found the answer. Outlook ignores the web link. It wants a mailto link. So the solution is to add both. For example:

    List-Unsubscribe: <http://example.com/unsub?u=user@customer.com>, <mailto:listuser@example.com?subject=unsubscribe>

  • Thanks for sharing back the solution. Much appreciated. It will be very beneficial for other community members who have similar questions.

By the way, do you mind to mark the reply as answer so it will be easier for others to find the useful one?

  • Whilst I thought I had stumbled on the answer coming to this post, I have found that as of Jun 2018 this solution does not work for outlook.office.com.

    Has something changed?

I have my List-Unsubscribe exactly in the format as above and still outlook.office.com does not recognise the header:

    List-Unsubscribe: <http://url>, <mailto:address@domain?subject=unsubscribe>

Any further assistance would be greatly appreciated!

  • We are also seeing the same issue - I tried using just the mailto:, just the URL, and both together. I even tried putting them in a different order when I was using both. Nothing changed the notification that '[SENDER] hasn't given us any information...'

The only thing that removed the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the page altogether was if the BCL was 0. But this doesn't help because we are generally considered a BCL of 3, which is a bulk sender that has very few complaints. Having a BCL of 0 generally only applies to individual users, not companies and organizations that send a lot of email.
