    I have a blog that accepts comments which are marked as "pending" as soon as the comment is posted. Appropriately the comment is not visible to the rest of the network until a moderator approves it for publication.

    But when it is in the pending state, the comment is not visible even to the person who posted it, even though the Draft Item Security is set to make it visible to "only users who can approve items (and author of the item)" .

    How do I allow a user to view his comment prior to it being approved?

    Exactly. "only users who can approve items (and author of the item)" itself tells you that the draft items are visible only to the approvers.

    In order for users to see their own drafts, Select the second option, "Only users who can edit items" in Draft item level security.

    Second thing is change in the "Advanced Settings"

    In Item level permissions -> Edit access change to Only Their own.

    Please note that these changes needs to be done on Comments list
