Do we have to uninstall v3.5 tech preview before installing v4Beta? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have numerous computers with 3.5 tech preview installed.  I remember hearing something about having to undo all the registry settings if I uninstall 3.5 or something. I forget but I do remember something about the registry settings staying in place for some reason.  I want to know if I can just install v4 on top of 3.5 or do I have to undo all the settings first and then uninstall emet 3.5 tech preview. Do we have to uninstall 3.5 to install v.4 beta ?

  • Hi James,

As mentioned on Page 40 (Section 7.4 General Questions) of the EMET v4.0 Beta Users Guide (a PDF file located in the folder into which you choose to install EMET), this is the advice for upgrading from a previous version of EMET to EMET v4.0 Beta:

    -----------------------------

I have an old version of EMET installed. How do I upgrade to EMET 4.0 Beta?

It is recommended that you first uninstall the old version of EMET via Windows Control Panel, and then manually delete the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\EMET and HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\EMET keys prior to running the EMET 4.0 Beta installer.

    -----------------------------

As mentioned by Quitch in the following thread, the second registry key ( HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\EMET ) may not be present in the registry. This can safely be ignored and you can continue with the installation.

I have so far installed EMET v4.0 Beta on 1x Windows 7 64 bit SP1 and 1x Windows XP SP3 system without any major issues. For the issues that others and I have encountered, they are detailed in the recent threads on this forum.

For your information, the final version of EMET 4.0 is scheduled for release on the 14th of May 2013 (if all goes according to plan) as mentioned in the following blog post:

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/srd/archive/2013/04/18/introducing-emet-v4-beta.aspx

UPDATE 9th May 2013: According to the following blog post, the final version of EMET 4.0 has been delayed by 2 weeks and is now scheduled for release on the 28th of May 2013:

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/srd/archive/2013/05/08/emet-4-0-s-certificate-trust-feature.aspx

I anticipate (I could be wrong) that upgrading from EMET v3 to EMET v4 will be a supported upgrade path when the final version is released. Further details are provided in the following thread:

If you require any further assistance or have any other questions, please let us know. Thank you.
