  • Question

  • Hello,

i tried to join a member server windows server 2016 Essential on a existing domain of a DC server Windows Server 2016 Essential, everything works fine but In the member server log i get the Error Message:

"the Non-domain Member Check policy detect a condition in your environment that is out of compliance with the licensing policy. This server can only be in a workgroup or be a domain controller.

    Is this correct?

if yes witch one of the two server is bette to upgrade to standard license DC or the member server?

  • Hi,

Windows Server Essentials can only be deployed as PDC which holds all FSMO server roles. So, there should be only on Windows Server Essentials on the same domain, and once WSE has been deployed, it must be primary DC.

If you need a member server(secondary DC) to existing domain, then, keep WSE as your primary DC, and transition another one to be Windows Server Standard or Datacenter version. Detail steps you can reference “Transition from Windows Server Essentials to Windows Server 2012 Standard”(it is also applied to Windows Server 2016 Essentials):
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server-essentials/migrate/transition-from-windows-server-2012-essentials-to-windows-server-2012-standard

Please note that, Windows Server Essentials also has other limitations, such as:
    1. It supports up to 25 users and 50 devices.
    2. Trusts or parent/child domains is not supported.

There is compliance detection on WSE, once above limitations are not met, error or warning such as you mentioned would be logged and your system will automatically shut down due to the incompliance. If you do not want above license limitation, however, you still want to use WSE relate functions, such as Dashboard, client backup, Anywhere Access, you can consider of Windows Server Standard/Datacenter with Essentials Experience server role installed.

Install and Configure Windows Server Essentials or Windows Server Essentials Experience:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server-essentials/install/install-and-configure-windows-server-essentials-or-windows-server-essentials-experience
