R Open 3.3.1 not using all available cores. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I recently purchased an OpenVZ VPS with  1GB RAM and 4 vCPU advertised running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. After installing Microsoft R Open on the VPS and running it I see this:

Using the Intel MKL for parallel mathematical computing(using 1 cores).

I tried setMKLthreads() to no avail. Furthermore detectCores() from the parallel library shows 6 cores.

    > setMKLthreads(4)

Number of threads at maximum: no change has been made.
    >
    > library(parallel)
    > detectCores()
    [1] 6

Here're the some details of my VPS according to vHWINFO:

SO: Ubuntu 14.04.5 LTS 64 bits
     kernel: 2.6.32-042stab113.21
     virtual: OpenVZ
     cpu: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1241 v3 @ 3.50GHz
     vcpu: 6 cores / 6999.88 bogomips
     RAM: 1024 MB (95% used) / swap 2048 MB (1% used)

MKL works perfectly on my personal multi-cored computer. Is this a limitation of OpenVZ virtualization?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

    Many thanks,

    Kyle
