Duplicate Emails received from SQL Reports nightly

    Question

  • Hi All,

    Exchange 2013, 2xCAS and 2xMBX DAG.

Client has nightly reports set up to send out from their SQL server using SP_dbsendmail. Since last Wed, they are getting duplicated items received to the members of their distribution lists from one particular job in SQL (at 7.45 am).

The message ID and received time are different (9 mins apart) across the duplicated emails however the client has checked the submission via SQL and only one email is being sent. The ShadowRedundancy feature is enabled.

Can you review the attached redacted headers ('original' email on the right and duplicated email on the left) to advise what may be happening?

    Thanks in advance,

    Pete MB

You might need to enable protocol logging and look at the logs to see if this server is indeed submitting multiple copies of the report.  I might also check out the message tracking logs as well and see what it reveals.  I would also check the server and see if there are any scheduled tasks or something in the maintenance plan/backup that would cause this.

  • Thanks; I have been through the message tracking logs and can see that the following string appears in the SourceContext filed for emails that are duplicated; this 'Queued mail for redundancy' only started on the 23rd after no changes were (knowingly) made to the Exchange environment:

    HMG-MBX-002.REDACTED=250 2.6.0 <6003d04ed1a245e8891fc04f44cea385@HMG-MBX-002.REDACTED> [InternalId=HMG-MBX-002.REDACTED, Hostname=13310103650367] Queued mail for redundancy

<2c5d94a6a4ba4bcaa5889dc4d7d8c285@HMG-MBX-002.REDACTED> < Message ID for first email

<f9d7f38039b84097bfd853ca21290a78@HMG-MBX-001.REDACTED> (Message ID for duplicated email)

Up until the point that this started happening for these SQL emails specifically (22nd November), each email shows HAREDIRECTFAIL in the EventID field of message tracking. From the 22nd, the duplicated emails show HAREDIRECT instead and this correlates with the 'change' in MessageID indicated above.

How could this have a) Suddenly started 'working' (ie what was missing during initial configuration) and b) Now HAREDIRECT is 'working' why is it duplicating email for just this SQL sender?

  • Hi,

Have you recently made any changes on exchange servers?

I noticed you have received duplicate Emails with two different message id. The issue may be caused by the shadow message.

For further analysis, please run the following command to check the detailed infos about the duplicate emails:

    Get-Messagetrackinglog -sender user@domain.com -MessageSubject "Email Subject"|fl
