I can't delete the partition or even re-initialize the drive.
It's a 300gb external USB drive, and the partiton is in the middle of the 300mb. I would like to end up with one partiton so I can use the drive for backups.
Try using this utility called killdisk from http://www.killdisk.com/ . Once you perform a low level delete, you should be able to delete all the partitions and then create a single volume and be able to format it NTFS or any other file system.

I let killdisk run for a few moments, then notices that even on it's fastest setting it would take over 4 hours. So I stopped it. It had the effect I wanted though, it wiped the partition table. I initialized and formatted my new big partition and did my backup.
