Reports not being generated from TS Client version 4.5.1.15580 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Just noticed that applications being launched from Cirtrix Servers do not appear to be logged on my 4.2 reports. I am running Application Utilization reports from my 4.2 management console. The database is on it's own SQL Server. Apps accessed by desktop clients (either 4.2 or 4.5.1.15580) are being logged. Should I be seeing the Citrix launched attempts in the reports as well? we publish the apps as follows: c:\Program Files\Softricity\SoftGrid for Terminal Servers\sfttray.exe "AppName".

  • Hello,

    I have the same problem (no reporting).

    However, do a reinstallation (uninstall, reboot, install) and it starts working.

    I did get more error messages though....

    (well, not the first issue I had with my 4.5 implementation - but the customer is tired of opening MS support cases so this is the best I could do..)

  • Hello,

    Is the client in online mode?

  • Znack,

    Under the client properties, Connectivity Tab:

    Allow Disconnected Operation is Checked
    Limit disconnected operation to 90 days is Checked

    work Offline is not Checked.

    So I assume this means I am running online mode.

    also, I looked at the sftlog.txt on my Citrix servers and they are logging connections, just doesn't seem to be getting to the database perhaps? Desktop clients, as mentioned above, are reporting correctly.

    Thanks

  • Hello,

    Just because it isn't in offline mode doesn't mean it has connection. Any indication in the log-file that its disconnected?

    How do you verify that the ts-client doesn't report in?

  • Hello,

    no indication that it is disconnected, each TS client launches applications fine. The launches are logged in sftlog. Looked at the line in log file that occured as the client was started after reboot, did not say it was in offline mode or anything. I published a new application last week. gave access to only myself on WinXP and tested the application for functionality. Then, changed OSD so application would only publish to 2003 Terminal Server. then published application in Citrix and allowed the end users to test. Today, if I go into my Management console and run report on the new app, it only has the sessions created by my testing on a Workstation from last week. None of the end user tests appear in the report. If I then search through the sftlogs on my Citrix servers, I can see that users are launching and running the app and have done so over the past few days. I am noticing this on several applications that I have setup to run only in TS environment, the report will show my initial testing from a WS client, then nothing else.

    thanks for your help.

  • Hello,

    Well, lets try to narrow it down:
    1. What version is the server?
    2. What version is the client?
    3. Can you repeat the issue on a desktop with the same version-number?
    (can you narrow it down to a specific client to avoid looking at several clients)

  • Znack,

    1.Server version is 4.1.1.302
    2.Client having the issue is 4.5.1.15580
    3. Have 4.5.1.15580 desktop client running on a PC and launches of apps are not being reported on when I run a report.
    4. My 4.2.2.15 clients are reporting fine

    Maybe the 4.5.1.15580 client does not play well with the older server.

    Thanks

  • Hello,

    After you have launched an application from a client not reporting in, can you paste the log-entries here?

    Basically it would be fun to see normal-log entries from application start to application shutdown.

  • Hi,

    Do you get any entries to the server's log file?

  • I checked the sft-server.log and it does not have any entries from the times above. Is there another log I could check?

    Well, you could try to increase logging level on server to see if it start to reveal something?

  • One thing to be aware of that often trips up customers running reports for the first time.  This might not be your issue, but is always good to document for others.

    Application usage does not appear in reports until the day following the running of an application.  This is because a SQL job is run each night which is needed to be run before the usage is reported.  This job handles record discreprencies (from the server viewpoint) for lost client connections, whether from a server reboot or a client going away for what ever reason.  So if you run an app today and run a report for today it will not show up.  If you run the report tommorrow for the (then) previous day, the app will appear.

    _____

    As to your problem - I have not tested that combination of client/server.  The 4.1/4.2 server runs reports based on events that go into the server log file (these are simultaniously recorded in the database "Applications Usage" table.  Check your "default provider" settings in the management console and make sure the "metering" checkbox is selected, as this would cause the database records to not be written.  You can also use SQL tools to look and see if the records are present.  In 4.5, the mechanism has changed to provide better report data.  The client caches usage information in an XML file which is then sent over RTSP/S on next contact with the server.  This allows disconnected app usage to be captured.  Since the 4.1/2 server can't process that XML information it is dropped.  As I said I have not tested that combination for reporting, but I would have expected the server to record app usage as it used to with the old client (based on RTSP play/stop commands) -- but perhaps not.  Check these things and report back as we all would like to know if the combination of a 41/42 server and a 4.5 client is a problem for reporting!

  • Yeah, I was also thinking about the changes in 4.5 client/server communications as for the possible reason, but if clients are operating online (i.e. no buffering of metering information done) I thought that on-the-wire conversation has not been changed. But yes, that would be my guess as well.

    The metering checkbox is probably enabled already as older clients report statistics just fine.

  • Hello,

    How have you defined the content-path under system options?

    Noticed the following;

    [05/07/2009 13:26:42:215 ???? INF] {tid=2434:usr=}
    Starting sort of older Sec9.

    [05/07/2009 13:26:42:293 SWAP INF] {hap=10EC:app=IMS Dataview 7.002:tid=2434:usr=}
    Elapsed time for upload: 0.172 seconds

    [05/07/2009 13:26:46:621 SWAP INF] {hap=10EC:app=IMS Dataview 7.002:tid=2434:usr=}
    Elapsed time for launch: 5.63 seconds

    [05/07/2009 13:27:03:449 REPT WRN] {tid=1A70:usr=}
    The Application Virtualization Client report data cache could not be sent to Publishing Server URL 'rtsp://softgrid..local:554/' (rc = 1690650A-200001F4).

    This error occurs for just about any user running a ts-client (rtm), and the content-path is set to a UNC-path.

    I just repeated the test in a lab-environment with a desktop-client, and if I set the content-path to a UNC-path it doesn't work. Configuring it to use a HTTP address makes the issue disappear.

    Effect? Well, I can't extract a report of System Utilization for example...

  • Hello,

    Here's what i found, the Application Utilization usage is sent only when you do a "refresh". So if you launch the application by the OSD file and dont use the refresh function (example : by user login) you'll never get the application usage report for this computer. I guess that you dont have enter a Publishing Server in the client.

    I'm looking to do the same thing as you with the application usage too but haven't found a solution yet.

    Good luck
