ConfigMgr 2012 Upgrade RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are looking to upgrade from 2007 R3 to 2012..I have a couple questions about some optional roles and where is the best place to install them.

We will be settingup a standalone primary with SQL server installed on the primary (we have under 25,000 clients).

    1 x Primary (DB, AI) - Physical

    2 x MP's - Virtual

    3 x DP's - Virtual

    1 x SUP - Virtual

    1 x (FSP and SRS) - Virtual

So in total I will have 8 servers, I am stuck on where I should install the following roles:

-Enrollment Point, Enrollment proxy point, Out of Band Service Point, System Health Validator Point and State Migration Point. Should I put the SMP by intself on another server and then combine the EP, EPP and OOB on another server? Or should I put all of them on the Primary?

  • Yes. In general, those are very low overhead roles also so there isn't a big need to move them to a separate system.

Separating the SUP probably isn't necessary either -- the SUP is very low overhead also so you could simply put all of these roles on the primary or a single remote system.

  • Will you be using Out of Band Management, Device Management, or NAP? If not, none of those "extra" roles you listed are needed.

The SMP has almost no overhead except disk space *if* you are using it for OSD. Otherwise, there is no need for it either.

If you are using NAP, then the SHV must be installed on the system hosting your Windows NAP services.

Based on the by the the book numbers, you are short on DPs -- DPs support up to 4,000 clients.

  • thanks Jason,

Yeah, we alreay have provisioned machines in 2007 with AMT, so we want to continue using it. I don't think we will be using System Health Validator. Would installing the following roles on seperate site server work together?

-Enrollment Point and Out of Banf Service Point

    -Enrollment proxy Point

-Application Catalog website point and Application Catalog web service point

Thanks I will also add one more DP to the mix. I will also add the SMP role to my FSP and SRS box.
