Internet Explorer 11 crashes on Startup (Windows 7) RRS feed

  • Question

  • As soon as I open Internet Explorer 11 it crashes. The instant IE is launched it crashes, never starts. The event log is below which tells me nothing.

I have researched this and tried the following:

    • Reset Internet explorer to defaults and reset advanced settings
    • Disable all add-ons
    • Removed and re-install Internet explorer via add/remove features (reboot inbetween)
    • Logged on as a different user still crashes
    • Started going through all running processes closing one off at a time and trying to start but would crash
    • Starting IE in safe mode
    • Scanning Windows system files for any corruption using sfc /scannow (no problems found)
    • Windows is fully patched
    • Virus scan nothing found

System restore is not possible as I was told by the user it started happening months ago and there's no longer a restore point that far back. Only entry related to IE is below, this gets logged whenever I try to open IE.

  • Hi,

Obviously your issue is something to do with your Start Page settings.

you haven't tried starting it with about:blank as your only Start Page.

Start>Control Panel>Internet Options>General tab, select about:blank as your only homepage.

If IE is prone to crashing (IE will save your open tabs when it crashes) and may try to re-open those tabs when you next restart IE...

select also Start up>Start with homepage. (not "Start with tabs from last session")

You could update userprofiles so that they are unable to change the setting for the start up page... to "Start with tabs from last session".

You could view the windows event viewer to find out which website domain in the users last session is causing IE to crash in the first place.

  • I had the same problem.  If you are connected to a Domain Server, remove your ID from Active Directory and

re-add it. This corrected the problem for me.
