can soemone please cobfirm what permissions need to be given for a user to be able to check in / check out a document
For some staff when they click on the file edit they dont see the check in / check out option.
I gave user contribute rights so I am confused

Contribute rights should do this fine. Have you made sure that the item/library doesn't have unique permissions?

Hi,
Contribute access is fine for this activity.
Check if check out is required or not in list settings.

This folder has unique permissions. I broke the standard permissions to remove some users
What confuses me is that users with full control see the check in options but user with just contribute do not
