Users Lost Acces to Project Site RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm seeing intermittent behavior of users losing access to Project Sites.  One day they'll have it, then the next all of a sudden they get an "Access Denied" and they have to be re-added to that Project Site.  Are there any operations or behaviors that I should take a look at to see what might be causing this?  Anyone have any experience in seeing this issue, and resolving?

    Thanks much! - M

  • Hi

In the Project site Permissions section there is 2 ways to give permission

    1. if you want to automatically give  Project Web Access users the permission to access the project site after it is created.

    2. If you clear this check box, you will need to manually grant access permissions after the project site is created.

Every time when you publish the project project site get sync with project team member and give access to team member if you choose 1st option.

this issue normally come into picture when you choose 1st option and at the same time give access to team members manually then whenever project get publish it will remove manual added team member.

You can check this and let us know.

  • OK, so, this issue is indicative of users being given access to a Project Site manually, and not letting Project Server's sync do it.

Are there any other scenarios that would cause a user to lose access to a Project Site that they had acces to previously?

    Thanks - M

  • No, there is no other reason behind the issue ( i am assuming Project sites are inheriting permission from root site).

You have to stick with one approach either

Automatically give  Project Web Access users the permission to access the project site after it is created.

    Or

manually grant access permissions after the project site is created.

Because every time when Project get publish it get sync.

  • Understood...having the system automatically sync will override any manual permission assignments to the Project Site (thereby removing folks manually added).

Are there any other scenarios that may cause the loss of access?

    Thanks - M

  • NO (if your farm is healthy means up to date with latest CU or Service pack) and if you are not using any custom code.

  • Hi Michael,

Are the users added to a SharePoint group or Project Server groups?

Project Server groups can be identified by the name - such as Project Managers Group (Microsoft Project Server).

In case the permissions are being lost from SharePoint groups then you can try installing FEB 2013 CU (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2760772) for Project Server 2010 which addresses a known issue. [Assume that you add users to custom SharePoint groups in a Project Web Application site collection. However, when the server performs a user synchronization Queue Service job, these users lose their permissions to access resources.] REF#: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/brismith/archive/2012/10/24/psvr2010-i-m-sure-i-added-some-users-to-that-sharepoint-group.aspx

In case the permissions are lost from Project Server groups then we might have to look whether any of the synchronization jobs have failed in the Queue.
