Enable File and Print Sharing on Firewall in Windows XP RRS feed

  • Question

  • Windows XP SP3

I have a Windows XP machine that has File and Print Sharing UN-checked in the Firewall.

So I cannot RDP into this PC or get into thru explorer C$.

If I turn off the Windows Firewall Service, I have no problems.

Group Policy does push out some firewall changes.

I have logged in as local admin and tried to check this box, but everything is greyed out. How can I fix this? We need to have the Firewall working on all PC's.

I tried to reset to defaults in Firewall >Advanced Tab, but that did not do anything.

    Please help, anybody.

  • As you say, Group Policy is pushing out firewall settings, and that is why some settings are greyed out:  They have been locked by Group Policy.  Logging on as the local Administrator will not help.

These settings need to be changed at the Domain or OU Group Policy level.

  • Hi RJ,

You will need to modify the firewall settings in GPEditor.

Go to Start > Run > GPEDIT.MSC and click ok

You can force firewall settings on the local machine if you wish or you can add them to your .adm template and re-save the policy on your netlogon directory
