Fill custom field drop down box dynamically RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

We have a custom document imaging system that scans documents and inserts it and the meta data into a document library. A workflow kicks off when documents are added so specific approvers are emailed. When the initial approver edits the document's meta data the workflow continues and will send any additional approvers an email. What I need to be able to do now is fill a combo box dynamically when the initial approver edits the meta data so they can select the email addresses for additional approvers if needed. I could use static entries for the drop down box and enter all the email addresses or even use a list and have it fill the combo box, but what I would really like to do is have the combo box filled dynamically when the user selects it so specific emails are displayed. It needs to get the current logged in user and fill the combo box with email addresses for a specific company the user belongs to from a list of email addresses where there are multiple company email addresses. This will allow users at other companies to be able to see only the email addresses for the approvers at their company and not muddy the process by showing all the email addresses for all the companies. I would appreciate any assistance with this and thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  • Hi,

Are you using custom workflow? If you use custom workflow then you can query the the list using CAML to get required emails. when you will show the form, you can fill the dropdown. The following link may help:

  • I would also consider using jQuery.  You can add some to the data entry screen and put the logic there for filtering the values that you want.

  • Sorry again for the long delay but I have taken another path to resolving this issue. I have started building a custom State Machine workflow and that way I can validate the names with Active Directory and use the internal user control on the custome edittask form when needed. Thank you for you assistance and I will close this thread as complete.
