Office 2007 apps have problems accessing documents on NFS

Question

Hi there
I am hoping you can help me, I have an issue with a number of users opening files in the following environment. Using Office 2007 SP2 on Windows XP SP3 (embedded edition) via Citrix. Users are accessing Office documents stored on a Unix File Store (NFS). There is a random problem, where some users are trying to access a file and are being informed that it is "locked for editing by XXXX", where XXXX is actually one of 2 different user accounts, both of which are support staff and not end users and so should not have a reason to be opening/editing the end users documents.
What I need to know is the following:
1) Are office 2007 files supported on Unix file stores?
2) Are there any known issues with Office documents on NFS shares similar to the symptoms above.
3) Can you give me any advice/guidance in troubleshooting this issue.
Note: I have currently asked for event logs from the end users system, confirmation that they are using Microsoft Windows Services for Unix (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321712) and to check if there are any scheduled tasks/maintenance being run under the 2 support staffs user accounts and details about the version of Unix and share permissions etc.
Many thanks
Caroline

Hello Caroline,
I think you are on the right track with looking at task\maintence being run on the server. I would also look at any applications that may be running on the server that would scan files like backup software or anti-virus.
Does this issue affect all Office applications or is it just Word?
Does this issue only happen to certain types of files like only .doc files or only .docx files?
Do the users share a normal template?
