Javascript errors "null or not an object" and "Could not complete the operation due to error 8007ffff" RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am getting several javascript errors that I haven't been able to fix. So far, searched have proved fruitless...

We first noticed the problem on 3/31/2011 when we were updating some pages.

I got a call from one of my power users that a webpart was "locked" and couldn't be opened.  When you first browse to the page, everything looks okay.  When you click on the dropdown to open the menu to modify the webpart, an "Error on page." message shows up in the lower left of the IE browser.

    Webpage error details

    User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/4.0; SLCC2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30729; Media Center PC 6.0; InfoPath.3; .NET4.0C; .NET4.0E)

I copied the contents of the web part (content editor web part) and pasted it into a new web part.  I killed the old one by opening up Web Part Page Maintenance page "?contents=1".  That got rid of the web part that was acting up.  It turns out, there is a larger problem.

After I killed the web part, another one on the page did the same thing.  Long story short, only one web part appears to work correctly.  We are using publishing page templates, so I can open the web part using the page editing toolbar by going to page/modify web parts and selecting the web part I want to work on.  The tool pane does open, and all items appear to work, except for the Rich Text Editor which gives me this error:

Message: 'currentStyle.backgroundColor' is null or not an object
    Line: 5859
    Char: 2
    Code: 0
    URI: http://rtshare/_layouts/1033/HtmlEditor.js

I have tried to copy the contents from those web parts into new web parts on a new site, and I get similar results.

I've also noticed that I get similar errors when I open the Page Content, go to Edit Content and then try to change font colors or text highlight color.

Message: Could not complete the operation due to error 8007ffff.

Other site appear to mostly function as intended - I can open up other content editor web parts on other sites, and they appear to work, including the font color and text highlight color.  Page Content and the Edit Content for those pages does not appear to fully function either - the font color pickers do not work, but other functions do.

As part of the troubleshooting, I have renamed the .js files shown in the error messages in the 12 hive and replaced them with files from my test server with no success.  Any ideas would be much appreciated!

  • Dumb question are there any other CEWP webparts present on the page,  also try adding the following to the end of your site URL

    ?PageView=Shared&ToolPaneView=2

to get to the advance webpart screen to uncover any webparts that were closed maybe something there will lend a clue to the issue.  Make sure there is no other reference to <div> or any other code that may interfer with the page processing styles on the page on any other webpart presented on this page.  We can elimate other parts quickly doing this, the answer lies somewhere on this page, other sites should not be presenting this issues on their pages.  Can you turn on Debugging for this application to get to the Debugging code.  You will have to edit the web.config file on the WFE server hosting the application.  if you are not sure where to go for this on the server hosting the application go the the inetpub dir on the c:drive (inetpub/wwwroot/wss/port# for app) click on the dir with the port# for the application and the web config file is at the root of this folder.  open with notepad (can make a backup to safeguard against improper changes and save to desktop to restore after getting debugging info) and look in the file for the following lines to change . . .

     Change: <SafeMode MaxControls="200" CallStack="false" ...>

    To: <SafeMode MaxControls="200" CallStack="true" ...>

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Change: <customErrors mode="On" />

    To: <customErrors mode="Off" />

once you save the changes (reset is not required) go to the site in question and try to modify the changes and the debugger with present the actual problem which will help to debug the issue.

  • Dumb question are there any other CEWP webparts present on the page,

Yes, there is one other CEWP which is working with no problems.

also try adding the following to the end of your site URL ?PageView=Shared&ToolPaneView=2  to get to the advance webpart screen to uncover any webparts that were closed maybe something there will lend a clue to the issue.

There are no other web parts that are closed.  using the URL to get there is a lot faster than going to add a webpart and going to the advanced web part link.

Make sure there is no other reference to <div> or any other code that may interfer with the page processing styles on the page on any other webpart presented on this page.  We can elimate other parts quickly doing this, the answer lies somewhere on this page, other sites should not be presenting this issues on their pages.

It's fixed!  I guess for some reason the tags in the working CEWP were causing the issue.  The page appears to be working correctly now!  I didn't even think to check that!  I'll keep these notes handy for setting up debugging mode if I have issues in the future.  Thanks for the help!

Can you turn on Debugging for this application to get to the Debugging code.  You will have to edit the web.config file on the WFE server hosting the application.  if you are not sure where to go for this on the server hosting the application go the the inetpub dir on the c:drive (inetpub/wwwroot/wss/port# for app) click on the dir with the port# for the application and the web config file is at the root of this folder.  open with notepad (can make a backup to safeguard against improper changes and save to desktop to restore after getting debugging info) and look in the file for the following lines to change . . .

  • Hi kapwinnnng,

The first error "Message: 'style.display' is null or not an object" occurs in the MSOWebPartPage_OpenMenu(attached at the bottom of this reply) in ie55up.js.
    Error "8007ffff" should mean cderr_dialogfailure.

From the code, it seems the web browser cannot get the style.display and call a common dialog correclty. It might be caused by the web page is corrupted, so that the style.display property cannot be found from the minOption object.

The possible workaround is restarting the Internet Information Server(IIS) to clear the cache in the application pool, then re-open the page, click "CTRL" and key "F5" to force refresh the page.

In addtion, based on my searching, it seems the issue can be caused by DTV tag in the Content Editor Webpart(CEWP):
In the CEWP there was a hardcoded line within a DIV tage where we saw the webpartzone, the webpartId and the webpartGUID
Remove the line and the according closing </DIV> to solve the issue.

    Thanks,
    Jinchun Chen

  • Addtionally, could you please help to check if there is any error in the SharePoint ULS logs?

    Thanks,

  • Thank you for the reply.  I have tried restarting IIS, that did not fix the problem.

Unfortunately, I'm not a developer, so I will need more detailed instructions regarding removing the line mentioned above.  Specifically, where the file is that needs to be edited.

The ULS logs are throttled way back because of the size of the logs we were getting.  Would you happen to know which category in the Event Throttling would capture any errors on the web page?

  • Have you tried to remove the curropted webpart by going to the site where you are having an issue and replace default.aspx with ?contents=1, which will bring up the webpart maintenace page, check the webpart that is curropted and delete . . .

    eg.  sharepoint.com/sitename/?contents=1

  • Yes, I have tried that.  In fact, the web part maintenance page is the only way to delete the web part.  The thing that is really getting me though, is that when I try to add another web part to replace the one I just deleted, the other web part on the page starts to experience the same problem.

  • This is what I found and I tested it so it appears to work as a solution . . .

On the server I turned debugging on the see what was the issue and the exact error being reported!  I can't take credit for the solution, this blog posted it and I am recopying the solution for you to review . . . the thread can be found here, all the best.

    http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en/sharepointcustomization/thread/a7ca9593-de6e-4ce2-9df6-b5b8b7a085d0

The issue with CEWP (content editor web part) is due to its wrong html entry. The copy & paste issue is not new for IT guys...so let me brief how to regenerate this issue and why it happened and its solution.

Go to any sharepoint site in your portal (I assume that you are having admin priviledge on your site).Say you have a site called as "INDIA WORKGROUP" and its url will be like http://www.xxxxxx.co.in/INDIA_WORKGROUP/pages/default.aspx

Now we will go for editing home page. If you are having admin rights you will see "Edit Page"from "Site Actions" menu.Click the "Edit Page" menu and click "Add a Web Part", a popup will allow you to add CEWP from the section "Miscellaneous".Select the CEWP and click add button. From the right most menu "Edit" of the newly added CEWP select "Modify Shared Web Part". A new property panel will be appearing on right most side of the page. This will show two buttons as "Rich Text Editor..." & "Source Editor...". Source editor is for plain text editing and Rich text will give you a fully functioning editor with HTML editing capabilities. We will go for Rich text editor button by clicking and enter the contents as "KAPIL's Observation" Select the whole text in bold font ... (Don’t copy & paste, write manual text entries) From the top menu bar you can see "<>" which in tooltip will display as "Edit HTML Source" by clicking it you will see the HTML which is going to render through the CEWP. Here in our case it will display as "<STRONG> KAPIL's observation</STRONG>".Click the same button "<>" to exit from HTML source. Click the "OK" button. From the property panel click the "OK" button followed by publishing the page or click "Exit editing the page".

So we did a CEWP and published its contents to read by all users. Now we will go for changing it as "MIKE's Observation" with same coloring, style and font. From the newly added CEWP webpart click the "Edit" menu and select "Modify Shared Web Part”. Select the text from GUI for "KAPIL's Observation" and copy it to obtain same font styling’s. From its property panel on right most side of the page click "Rich Text Editor..." before pasting it have a look at its HTML source by clicking "<>" menu. You will see the code as "<STRONG>KAPIL's observation</STRONG>" go back by clicking it again on "<>" menu. We will go for pasting the contents we copied, why we opted to copy and paste is to use the same font or color or styles we already applied for earlier contents. Delete all existing contents and paste the contents what we have now. Now check its HTML entry by clicking "<>" menu. What we see is like "<DIV id=WebPartWPQ13 class=ms-WPBody SelectedWebPart="true" WebPartID="c7cf21fb-fa5e-4ecc-9d9b-c7d75fa735d2" HasPers="false" width="100%"><STRONG>KAPIL's observation</STRONG></DIV>" The copy & paste made the whole mess by having the unwanted Div id with which our JavaScript functionalities will fail. Already our CEWP is having a DIV id and we copied another DIV id within it. Click "<>" and change the text with "MIKE's" and save the CEWP.Do above steps and publish your CEWP.

From the GUI click our CEWP web part’s "Edit" menu, but no submenus will appear for it. So the next option is to try with "Edit Page” from "Site Actions". From our CEWP  click the Delete "x" menu from right most corner. This will give you the error as"Guid should contain 32 digits with 4 dashes (xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx). "Luckily you are in home page I will tell you an option to recover it. From the top menu select "Page" >>"Modify Web Parts">> select our "Content Editor Web Part" this will help us to bring our Property panel and click the "Source Editor..." button and remove the unwanted DIV id i.e. remove "id=WebPartWPQ13"  and do other steps to publish the contents.

Now your contents are published and check for its "Edit" menu and its sub menu's like "Modify Shared Web Part" and others...Things will work properly now. The HTML is rendered properly with no issues... The unwanted DIV id made confusions and brings the above mentioned error.

But this kind of recovery is possible only if we get the property pane of our CEWP. If not we have to delete our CEWP by appending our page URL with "&contents=1" which will display all web parts in that page. Select  our CEWP and Delete it. Go to your page and add new CEWP and put desired text. If you are unable to edit the page append URL with "&toolpaneview=2"

Hope this material is close to our answer...and new finding on bringing property panel in edit page is mostly welcome.

    Thanks Mike for your answer.

Good day to all & bye.

  • Here are the contents copied from the source editor of the content editor web part in question.  I pasted this mess into notepad++ and was still unable to find anything relating to DIV style.  Any other ideas?
