Cannot type in search boxes on IE11 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Running Windows 7 SP1.

    Dell GX755

    4GB Ram

    Plenty of HD space

After IE11 is being installed by many teachers, they pull up yahoo or google and do a search. After the search results are displayed, we can no longer type in the search box now. Tried activating compatibility mode for the site. Also cannot select some drop downs on certain sites. HELP! Have over 400 pc's we manage. Any thoughts?

  • Hi,

Firstly, we need to check the following:

    1.  Do you mean the issue is only occurred on yahoo and google website?

    2.  How about other browsers? Do they also meet the same issue?

Based on your description, I would like to suggest you try the following to check the issue:

    1. To get the latest adobe flash player

Download and install the latest flash player on your computer by visiting the link below.

    Install Adobe Flash Player

    2.  Run Internet Explorer Performance Troubleshooter.

The Internet Explorer Performance Troubleshooter is an automated tool which will check for any performance issues which are common with the Internet Explorer on the computer and

    b. Type “Troubleshooting” in the search bar and press “Enter”.
    c. In the “Troubleshooting” window, click on “View All” on the left pane.
    d. Click on “Internet Explorer Performance”.
    e. Click on “Advanced” and then click on “Run as Administrator”.
    f. Click “Next” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooting process.

    3. Run IE with no add-ons as Rob said. Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Internet Explorer (with no add-ons).

    4. Reset Internet Explorer settings

  • Hi

ITs a known bug in those vendors toolbars.

check for updates from Yahoo and Google for their toolbars...

toolbar.google.com and toolbar.yahoo.com (although... the bug was only found recently.... I doubt that g or y have updated their MSIE addons)

IE11 no longer supports the MS selection method....

Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab>check "Display notification about every script error"

open a new tab with the Y of GTB displayed.... type a search term in their search box....

you should get a selection is undefined error.

Workaround: uninstall the GTB and YTB. Use GPO to prevent their re-installation (allowed addons list).Use Search Providers and Search from the address bar instead.

  • Thanks for the tip. However, the problem has nothing to do with a toolbar. The problem we are having is when we search on the yahoo or any site that has a box to search in.

  • IE version 11.162.10586.0

    update version 11.0.29

    Windows 10

No matter what website is selected in IE, if there is a fill in box, no text can be TYPED into the field. using a Cut/Paste method, one can add text, however, that is extraordinarily inconvenient.

websites I have accessed with no luck:

www.sbnation.com select Login, the popup login and password fields can be clicked in, no text can be TYPED

www.google.com no text can be typed into the Search box

www.msn.com no text can be TYPED into the search box

I have worked through all the Microsoft suggestions (register .DLL, reset IE), those do not work.  I have used standard user account, administrative accounts, all with no luck.

Thanks for any solutions to the typing problem.

  • No matter what website is selected in IE, if there is a fill in box, no text can be TYPED into the field.

I saw that once on Answers (long ago).  Workaround is to doubleclick in the vicinity of the input box and then tab into it.  Then you can type.  I never did figure out what could be causing it.  Fortunately it was only like that for a while.

Another thing that would probably work is to turn off CSS.  E.g. press Alt-V y N; then find the input box (wherever the webpage designer put it when creating the page); then the input box will probably work there.  So maybe you should try turning off scripting instead?

FWIW I tested your first example and had no trouble, either normally or using the workarounds.  Doing that reminded me of a refinement to the doubleclick idea for getting keyboard focus.  Do a Find for User and then press Esc; then press Tab.  You can even do it with the real thing but then it is a bit trickier because the first instance of User found is then not shown.  Nevertheless, if you are aware that the first instance is inside the input box you can then first press CursorLeft and then the Tab.  In fact, it helps to do that in the No Styles mode too.  Then you can enter your Username and switch back to Default Style  (Alt-V y D).  BTW there is something else interfering (probably scripting) so the workarounds were not working perfectly, only intermittently.
