How to develop State Machine Workflow

  • Hi,

    pls guide how to develop state machine workflow in SharePoint online. as we can develop state machine workflow in visual studio does it support SharePoint online,

    pls guide.

  • I don't know that its a requirement, but State Machine Workflows built in Visual Studio usually include code.  If they do, then they are incompatible with SharePoint online since it will only support declarative workflows.  

    An alternative that will give you essentially the same thing would be to build your workflow as a SharePoint 2013 workflow.  The 2013 workflow engine (Workflow Manager) uses stages rather than steps and the last step in each stage is a transition statement that decides which stage to process next.  It is essentially the same model as a State machine workflow, just that they call them stages instead of states.
