This certainly didn't used to be true although things may have changed.

You could upgrade WSS 2.0 to WSS 3.0 in-place.

Then you could install a new copy of WSS 3.0 on the new server and then use various methods (backup/restore or transfer of content databases) to transfer from WSS 3.0 to WSS 3.0. (both at the same fix level).

If MOSS 2007 is meant, the upgrade to that from WSS 3.0 can also be done in-place (either on the old server before transfer or on the new server - I'd probably do it on the old server).

There are MS papers by the score on how to upgrade in-place from 2.0 to 3.0 and how to move a WSS 3.0 system to another so I'm not going to go into details in this thread. OP: just look out for them.

Note:  V284 has recommended AvePoint in other posts. They are expensive (and if you work for them, V284, you should say so!)

  • You will have to manually upgrade it. There are however, some third party tools which might help you doing this.

If you are looking for third party tools. Look at this article. http://www.avepoint.com/sharepoint-to-sharepoint-migration-docave/
