Project 2007 client upgrade to Project 2010 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Greetings.

Ok the idea is to migrate Project Server 2007 to Project Server 2010.

Let me describe the current situation.
SERVER A - location where Project Server 2007 currently stands
SERVER A - location where Project Server 2007 PWA currently stands
SERVER B - A location where Project Server 2010 PWA currently stands

Clients (about 50 of them) are currently all using PROJECT 2007 client.

The idea was to migrate Project 2007 to 2010 in this steps.
First I would update all the clients from PROJECT 2007 to PROJECT 2010 version.

    QUESTIONS:
Project 2010 sw client is able to connect to Project 2007 server right?

I took a test client who is currently using PROJECT 2007.
I have made an upgrade of his client from 2007 to 2010.
I was surprise after the 1st time I have ran 2010, because it gave me an notification
that it has discovered I had 2007 before and if I wish to upgrade/copy profiles.
I happily clicked yes, but after that I recieve a sadly message error.

NO PERMISSIONS TO READ PROJECT SERVER ENTERPRISE GLOBAL FILE.
The Project Server Enterprise Global could not be accessed. Contact your Administrator.

    Whyyyy?

I thought it would be better and less painful if I upgrade clients from 2007 to 2010 and that they would still use PWA 2007 and the next phase would be to migrate PWA 2007 to 2010. Any other sugestion? It looks like that PROJECT 2010 client is unable to connect to 2007?

  • Hi there,

the Project Professional 2010 client cannot connect to Project Server 2007. Project Professional 2007 clients can connect to Project Server 2010 when Project Server 2010 is in BCM mode

    Thanks

  • Paul thanks for claryifing that.

While you are active on this forum is there any good step-by-step tutorial how should I migrate PROJECT 2007 to PROJECT 2010.

I think it will be a shock for clients when they will see a new PWA site. What are the recomendations?

  • Hi there,

I'm not sure if you have seen this link: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-GB/projectserver/ee691958(en-us).aspx

It contains useful links for upgrading including comms planning etc.

This link might be useful to pass around to users for using PWA etc: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc197578

Here is a link on the changes for Project 2010: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project-help/what-s-new-in-microsoft-project-2010-HA010354195.aspx

Useful interactive Project 2010 guide here: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/learn-where-menu-and-toolbar-commands-are-in-office-2010-and-related-products-HA101794130.aspx#_Toc268688374

    Changes to PWA: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/project-server-help/what-s-new-in-project-web-app-HA010351523.aspx?CTT=5&origin=HA010354195

I would recommend engaging with a EPM partner if you haven't already and plan the rollout of EPM2010 including full user training so they are comfortable with the changes to Project and PWA.

    Hope that helps :)

    Thanks

  • Hi there.

Thanks for thoose links, I'm sure they will be useful.

One more question and I'm out of there. Is it possible to "pause" current situation on Project Server 2007, migrate everything to Project Server 2010.

Then "resume" situation on Project Server 2007, and meanwhile play with the test user on the data I have migrated? Or migrate Project Server 2007 to Project 2010 is a one-way step?

  • Hi there,

I would recommend taking a snapshot of the Project Server 2007 data (using Project Server 2007 database backups and the database attach method: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee662496.aspx), key users UAT on the Project Server 2010 environment, while the Project Server 2007 environment is the Live / Production system that is still being used for planning / resourcing. Then once the 2010 environment has been tested and working as you expect, arrange an outage / downtime for Project Server 2007, backup up the SQL databases and attach these to the Project Server 2010 farm, UAT the system once more then go live on the Project Server 2010 farm.

These are highlevel steps, full planning / processes should be detailed for this upgrade.

    Thanks

    Paul

  • Hi there... The last question (I hope).

Ok presume that SERVER A holds a DB named PWA_Content  and PWA_SSP_Content. Damn, I don't know what that SSP means, but anyway if I backup this database and restore it on SERVER B...

Ok SERVER A PWA site was like this: http://serverA/pwa, and SERVER B PWA site will be like this: http://serverB/pwa now I have some problems understending this instructions part:

Add the content database to the Project Server 2010 farm. 1.Open a Command Prompt window as Administrator, and navigate to: %PROGRAMFILES%\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\BIN
    2.Run the following: STSADM.EXE -o addcontentDB -url<WebAppURL>-databaseserver<SQLServerName>-databasename<WSSContentDBName>
    For example: STSADM.EXE -o addcontentDB -url http://contoso -ds Contoso1 -dn WSS_Content
The database name should be the exact name of the content database you restored to SQL Server in the previous procedure. When the command prompt returns, the step has been completed.

What should that be in my case (I don't want to overwrite any other contents to any other sites, that's why I'm being caution).

Should it be like this: STSADM.EXE -o addcontentDB -url http://serverB/PWA_Content -ds ?????? -dn PWA_Content

  • Hi there,

You wont need the SSP_Content DB, just the content DB that holds the PWA site collection and Project Workspaces.

I would use the PowerShell commands.

First restore the Content DB to the SQL server that the Project Server 2010 farm is using, then run the Test-SPContentDatabase command:

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff607941.aspx

    Test-SPContentDatabase -name "MyContentDatabase" -webapplication http://ServerB

Resolve any issues, then run the Mount-SPContentDatabase command:

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff607581.aspx

Mount-SPContentDatabase "MyContentDatabase" -DatabaseServer "MySQLServer" -WebApplication http://ServerB

Hope that helps, if not, let me know. :)

Ok, hear me out, what were my steps.

Before I start describing my steps, let me stress that before making thoose steps I already have installed Project Server 2010 on serverB and there already stands a fresh/empty PWA Http://serverB/PWA.

    1. I have made a backup of databases on serverA:
    Analysis Repository
    ProjectServer_Archive
    ProjectServer_Draft
    ProjectServer_Published
    ProjectServer_Reporting
    PWA_Content_backup

    2. Restored thoose databses on Sharepoint 2010 - where PWA 2010 stands. Some databases (draft, published) did not let me to restore/owerwritten them because of an active connections.
Instead of killing those connections I detached those databases on serverB and proceed with restoring.

    3. After the restore procedure being finished I have ran this command in Sharepoint SHELL:

    STSADM.EXE -o addcontentDB -url http://serverB/pwa -ds serverB -dn PWA_Content
Which gave me 100% of completion but warned about some errors.

    4. I went opening the log error:

  • Ok mate thank you for your reply. I dont know why it is not visible here on forum and only in my e-mail inbox, soo I'm pasting it:

Another user, PWMather, has replied to a thread you have subscribed to in the Project Server - Setup, Upgrade, Administration and Operation Forum.

Thread Title Project 2007 client upgrade to Project 2010

    Reply:
    Hi there,
You wont need the SSP_Content DB, just the content DB that holds the PWA site collection and Project Workspaces.
I would use the PowerShell commands.
First restore the Content DB to the SQL server that the Project Server 2010 farm is using, then run the Test-SPContentDatabase command:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff607941.aspx
    Test-SPContentDatabase -name "MyContentDatabase" -webapplication http://ServerB
Resolve any issues, then run the Mount-SPContentDatabase command:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff607581.aspx
Mount-SPContentDatabase "MyContentDatabase" -DatabaseServer "MySQLServer" -WebApplication http://ServerB
Hope that helps, if not, let me know. :)
    Paul

  • Ok if I understand correctly, as a blank PWA site collection already existed rather deleting / detaching the databases first you would need to remove the link to those DBs in SharePoint first. Can you attach those original DBs again so the blank PWA site works? Then follow one of the many rollover guides available on the net such as this one:

    http://pwmather.wordpress.com/2012/04/10/projectserver-2010-environment-rollover-steps-powershell-ps2010-msproject-sp2010/

In this example use the PS 2007 dbs as the Production DBs.

    Hope that helps

    I have ran this commands:

    Remove-SPProjectWebInstance -Url http://sharepoint/pwa

    Dismount-SPContentDatabase "PWA_Content"

    Mount-SPContentDatabase “PWA_Content” -DatabaseServer “SQLSRV” –WebApplication http://sharepoint
    New-SPProjectWebInstance -Url “http://sharepoint/pwa” -AdminAccount “COMPANY\Admin" -PrimaryDbserver “SQLSRV” -PublishedDbname “ProjectServer_Published” -ArchiveDbname “ProjectServer_Archive” -DraftDbname “ProjectServer_Draft” -ReportingDbserver “SQLSRV” -ReportingDbname “ProjectServer_Reporting”

    Get-SPProjectWebInstance –URL http://sharepoint/pwa | Select ProvisioningStatus

And got a FAILED error. "Failed - see the Application event Log"

APPLICATION EVENT LOG HAD THIS MESSAGES:

  • Hi there,

Do you see any more information in the SharePoint ULS logs? There might be an issue with the existing 2007 site collection / content database that you are trying to upgrade.. Looking at the result from the Test-SPContentDatabase command you appear to have custom solutions that are referenced in the content database but these do not exist on the 2010 farm...Can you deploy all of these custom solutions to the 2010 farm then attach the content database? This might not be the reason for the error but these issue needs to be resolved as well

    Thanks

    Paul

  • Hi there,

I would close/ mark  this post as answered as it relates to Project 2007 Client and Project Server 2010. I see you have another post for the failed PWA site here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/projserv2010setup/thread/bbd93b7d-7e6c-4965-b93f-afe6ed09910e

It will be better to continue with that post to save any confusion.

    Thanks

    Paul
