Multiple issues with updates, dll and repair options RRS feed

  • Question

  • So I am listing all of this because it has all come to light from one issue.  I am on an HP Envy H8-1400Z with Windows 8 upgraded to 8.1.  Everything was good then one day it would not recognize my Iphone 5 but it did show under "other" with the yellow caution symbol.  I upgraded to an Galaxy S6 and when I tried to plug it in I got the same thing. It would not recognize it as an MTP only as an other with the yellow caution symbol.

I went to the updates section and tried to install some updates which did not go through so I tried the trouble shooter, the update tool from the MS website with no fix.  I had error 007312 if I remember correct (I have misplaced my notes at the moment). I have tried many different things on different answers all on MS site posts with nothing working.

I have stopped and started multiple things that were suggested still no luck.  Tonight I tried this (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/971058?wa=wsignin1.0) but when I tried to restart mshtml.dll I got a message (The module "mshtml.dll" was loaded but the entry point DLLRegistryServer was not found make sure that "mshtml.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file and try again.  I got the same message for shdocvw.dll.  I then found several articles that said try this or that  stuff like sfc /scannow which gave me the response "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation"

I tried again in safe mode with the same results.  I tried the DISM online clean image repair thing command and it said error: 14098 the componenet store has been corrupted.  I tried a fix that was suggested here (http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-windows_update/dismexe-online-cleanup-image-restore-health-failed/668ef107-5f4c-4959-ba93-76d052452315) (option 3) to no avail! I have not installed any new programs or modified a single thing so what in the hell is happening and how do I fix it so I can get windows to update again and I can get it to recognize my phones?  Thanks

You may need to specify the source files in DISM.  I suspect the system corruption is too far gone to do anything but a refresh but you should try DISM with specify source (you will need a win 8.1 ISO).  You can find the instructions for specifying source in this wiki. Use the win 10 method (it is the same for win 8.1)

Please run a system file check (SFC) & DISM if you are on win 8 or higher

All instructions are in our Wiki article below...

  • Thanks! I will try your suggestions.  I have tried SFC which I explained in my post and it comes back saying it can't run it with no code or explanation.  I am just curious how this happened if I am not loading new programs since the last time everything worked fine!

If I need to refresh which I have never done, I usually just reinstall the whole thing but I am tired of days on end of updates when you do that! Is there an indepth article that explains what I need to back up or save to an external and does it save you files as they are or do you have to reorganize everything? When you use refresh that is.  Thanks

Obviously if you cannot run SFC or DISM there is a systemic issue but if your primary concern is the S6 we may be able to address that.  The first thing I would do is to uninstall the device with the yellow exclamation point (!) as the OS should re-install the correct driver the next time you plug it in.  Have you checked the hidden devices by checking "show hidden" under view?

After clicking show go to the USB section and expand it.  There should be Samsung drivers like the below

  • I have tried this many times, it acts like it is reinstalling it then comes up under the other devices again with the yellow caution.  When I select update drivers it goes looking then says "Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it"

    MTP USB Device

One of the installers for this device cannot perform the installation at this time.

I have no idea what has happened since i cannot update through windows update and now it does not recognize either my Iphone or my Samsung.  I made an 8.1 ISO disk and am going to try the previous suggested fix and if that don't work refresh.  Thanks

Your pain should be short lived.  Win 10 should be released in the summer and the update is free.  Win 10 even in beta is better than win 8.1 (IMHO)

  • Hi,

As Zigzag mentioned, you might need to use dism with a repair source.

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /source:WIM:X:\Sources\Install.wim:1 /LimitAccess

For the update issue, run the troubleshooter again and check the diagnosticlog, since this issue only happened recently, so another option is resturning the system to a previous state with system restore and check if it can bring everything back to normal.

    Regards

From what I have heard sooner rather than later.  MS is anxious to get it out.  Expect something significant in the next week
