Manual Configuration of Outlook RRS feed

  • Question

  • One of my clients is using Windows XP Home which doesn't support the sign-in application. Can I manually configure their account in Outlook? I tried adding a profile from "Mail" in Control Panel. It prompts me to allow the autodiscover, which I do - but it then fails on the basis that an encrypted connection to the server cannot be made.

Are there manual configuratins settings we can use? I have tried everything. I also called MSOL support and they gave me a big ol' shoulder shrug.

I realize that XP Home is a horrible OS for this, but I would hope we have some manual configuration options available. Any thoughts?

  • You can manually configure a profile in Outlook for BPOS without using the Service Sign-In client.

Here are detailed instructions on how to do this: http://blogs.pointbridge.com/Blogs/schertz_jeff/Pages/Post.aspx?_ID=88

  • The instructions provided by Jeff will work for manually configuring the Outlook profile.

The difference between using the Sign-in client and not: certificates, which prevents AutoDiscover.

Without AutoDiscover, you will not download an Offline Address Book, or have access to Free/Busy information or Out of Office Assistant.

  • Hi,

The Windows XP home OS is missing many of the needed things around security for domains and active directory.

This is why it will not work.

No I am not sure but you can try calling support and ask them to set the user on the POP system. you may be able to get him mail tha way.

The POP access is only given on special request and you may have to ask for a supervisor but it can be done, I have just never tried it with XP home.

    Let me know,

  • I am not sure if that will work. SSO client not only configures Outlook and other services but SSO also downloads certificates and renew them as well..
Instead of doing all the reverse engineering, its always easier to upgrade to XP pro.

    Cheers!!!

  • Ashish, I've tested this process on workstations that do not have the SSO client installed and I've been able to authenticate to and access onlines mailboxes.  It's documented in the blog article.

  • Ashish - It is indeed easier for you and I to upgrade to XP Pro, but not for a client who is 1500 miles away.

Jeff - thank you very much for the detailed article. I was tinkering with the settings like this over the weekend. I'm going to have the client do the configuration. Hopefully we'll be in business. This will get us along until we can convice them it's time for an upgrade.
