Monitoring Availability Group Failover RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

Is is possible to monitor a failover of a SQL availability group with SCOM 2016? Meaning when AG transfers to a different node, SCOM should alert that a failover occured.

The availability groups in our environment are currently monitored by SCOM, but I couldn't find a monitor in the Health Explorer that satisfies the above requirement.

    Thank you.

  • Hi,

You can find what SCOM monitors in the SQL Server management pack guide:

I don’t think it monitors when a failover occurs, you will have to create an own monitor/rule for that and check for the event created whenever a failover occurs.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Fazio,

Failover of a SQL AG can generate an alert if its cluster specific. The alert rule is- 'Cluster resource failed' and source is 'Cluster service'. There is also an alert monitor- 'WSFC Cluster(rollup)' or 'Cluster resource group offline or partially online' but that will only alert when the AG is unavailable, not sure if it will alert on a failover.

You could definitely setup a custom rule/monitor if the above doesn't meet your expectations!
